Re: [MBZ] A+ Exam

2011-04-29 Thread LWB250
I worked on the first ISO9001 certification in the company when I was at
Kohler. What a PITA, and in all honesty, when it was all said and done nothing
changed - except the QA guys who bolted for much better jobs since they could
now say they did an ISO9000 certification. Worked out well for them, as they
found new jobs for lots more $$$

Re: [MBZ] A+ Exam

2011-04-29 Thread LWB250
Points well taken, Roger.

I was curious as I see it listed in a lot of job requirements, and after
looking it over closely, it just appears to be a "best practices" sort of
thing, nothing more. The study questions I read I could answer for the most
part without ever having read the material.

I agree with your comments regarding certifications, but if it's something I
can do easily and inexpensively, why not?

My current Security+ instructor has access to a test prep service that has
materials for just about everything imaginable. I am going to see if he has
anything on ITIL

We did the ITIL foundations class to get every one talking the same language
- I don't know that we accomplished that though ---

I'll add a little. I took a full week course on ITIL 2.0 a few years back. I
have my ITIL Foundations Certificate. The class was given by IBM and the test
was graded and certificates issued by a college in Canada. I think now you can
get about any certificate you want for less. I know some guys who were
"friends" with an instructor who let them (4) take their Six Sigma green belt
class/test as a group over the web. Of course, they all passed and received
their Green Belt certificates. I've worked on ITIL, Six Sigma, ISO9000, and
other methodologies over the decades. I don't put a lot of stock in
certifications. I've worked with too many "certified" people. I've always found
that good common sense and training goes a lot farther than any certificates.
Of course this is just my experience and .02. Others may differ...

I didn't think so after looking over some of the test prep stuff. Mostly looks
like procedural sort if things, many of which are common sense things.

Work sent a bunch of us to a 3 day ITIL V3 foundations course a year or two
ago. They covered a lot of ground, but it's mostly learning the terminology.
We had 100% pass rate for 40 people - can't be too hard. No one has gone on
to the other certs that I know, so can't comment on them.
One guy read a book, then took the foundations test and passed -- you don't
need the class.

[MBZ] A+ Exam

2011-04-28 Thread LWB250
Did the second half (practical) of my CompTIA A+ exam today.

Passed (790 out of 900) but found this part tougher than the first section.
Mainly because there was a lot of stuff on Vista, which I have never worked
with, especially the directory structures. That was probably what pulled my
score down.

Other than that, it was pretty easy.

Anyone know anything about ITIL certification?

Dan
