[MBZ] Adobe & MS (OT)

2014-03-21 Thread G. M. Brown
A word of caution for those who may be thinking about purchasing any Adobe
software. Since I had finally fully converted from my film camera photogear
(Nikon F) last year to digital stuff (Nikon D90), I recently purchased Adobe
Photoshop Elements 12 software and found out after the fact that these folks
don't even provide an instruction manual, so one has to purchase an instruction
book (e.g., "Photoshop Elements 12, the missing manual" - Barbara Brundage).
The little I've used the book thus far in trying to create a panorama, the
instructions are lousy, and Adobe wants to charge for this information, and the
place where I purchased the software was of little-no help either. The fellow
I talked to where I purchased the software also indicated that both Adobe & MS
are useless.
I hope this might help someone.

Adobe's products, even the consumer grade ones, have historically had a really
steep learning curve.

These products are supposed to be "intuitive" so you don't NEED
instructions. Ha, what a crock.

Anyway, aftermarket books are pretty good. I've been using Photoshop
for 15 years now, going back to version 2.5 on Mac OS 7.5.3. Elements
is a simplfied version, but is still quite powerful. Lots and lots
and lots of manipulations available, it's not something you learn in a
day or two.

Digital photography is not the same as film. Wait til you start to
print things, that's another whole can of worms! I strongly recommend
that you get or borrow a monitor calibrator and learn to "soft proof"
in Elements, otherwise printing will drive you crazy. There are HUGE
variations in output gamut and density between different types of
paper (and in my case, between pigment and dye printers), and until
you learn how to preview what you are going to print properly you are
going to be wasting large amounts of ink and paper!

The thing is you're talking about a MASSIVE application that can do a million
and one things, a "manual" would have to be a million pages and then you'd
complain because it took too much searching to find the one thing you want.

Fortunately there is TONS of free help on the interwebs. A good start would be
to find somewhere you could take a class. Local colleges will have such things
as do some photo studios. If you were up here I'd send you to my friend Tim who
teaches several Photoshop classes.

An alternative to Photoshop is Gimp (gnu image manipulation program) which is
free. Its very Photoshop-like to the point I've given up Photoshop and its
expense and use Gimp regularly. Its taken me awhile to convert but I'd only
been using Photoshop professionally for 10 years...

Used to be a big gamma shift between Windows and Mac too. Back in the early
days of digital video people decided they didn't need video output monitors
anymore and you'd see all sorts of weird output when they finally went to tape
or broadcast because nobody was ever proofing anything on a real calibrated
monitor.

It seems that there might be a rethink of some of these applications.
This same reality is what I saw using AutoCAD when I received a
paycheck. Pogroms do waaay too much in one application but perhaps a
revamp of approach might enable some specialization for different user
types.

I've used an older version of Photoshop to make panoramas, and now use MICE
- Microsoft Image Composite Editor. It's free, you just drop the
collections of images onto it, and it makes a panorama.

Use something like Photoshop to bulk correct the images, then let MICE
combine them. You can view some of mine on Photosynth if you have
Silverlight on a windows box at:

iPhoto and share them out and you'll have them in iPhoto in minutes.

DO NOT USE iPHOTO under any circumstances.

You can just copy the files to a folder and use whatever software you
like to adjust and print. Once in iPhoto, Apple sort of takes control
of your images and they are difficult or impossible to export.

I'm stuck making a trip out to my sister's someday and re-doing the
scanning of family photographs (going back to at least 1864) because
she scanned them into iPhoto and now cannot retrieve them. Huge pain.

Back them up to some sort of permanent storage as well, you never know
when a hard drive it going to crash. Found that out last month when
my laptop started growling, drive died before I got everything
copied. I get to do a year's worth of photo corrections again.

I wouldn't ban iPhoto so quickly

I import/scan everything into my system in RAW format, then use Aperture to
manage it. Aperture ports copies to iPhoto for day to day basic use, but the
RAW files never get touched. It's the same way in iPhoto if you use RAW as an
import format.

I suspect that she may have updated iPhoto and then tried to connect an older
iPhoto library to it. This can occur and is easily fixed - there are all sorts
of resources on the Web for this.

I would be interested to know more about her iPhoto issues. I'm sure they can
be easily fixed.
