Re: [MBZ] All alone again.
See now I consider Boston to get almost no snow. A 100" winter here is HORRIBLE. Drive 400 miles due north and its common to get more. Snow in Boston is often an all or nothing affair, other than the blizzard last February (on my birthday no less) we hadn't had significant snow since October 2011. We also tend to get a good melt (ie in the 60s) in late January so we don't tend to ever have a whole lot of snow on the ground at any one time. 2010/2011 was an exception, we started getting snow early and kept getting it all season. In March I had 3 feet of snow in my front yard... -Curt Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2013 10:27:08 -0500 From: Dan Penoff To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] All alone again. Indiana is sort of weird weather-wise, as the northern third of the state is influenced by weather off Lake Michigan. If you draw a line halfway between Lafayette (Purdue U) and extend it across through Marion ( south of Ft. Wayne) the weather is significantly different north of the line in the winter. Boston's winters are probably a little more damp due to the presence of the ocean, but I don't recall them getting the bitter cold Indiana gets in January and February from the "Alberta clippers" that descend down from Canada. Re: [MBZ] All alone again.
Mostly correct. Worcester == Wustuh Ruhveeyah usually has a descriptor appended at the beginning, but it is unsuitable for this venue. Summuhvull has a lot of Barneys living there. The usual path to success to move up in the world is Summuhvull (or Ruhveeyah) to Meffah to Malden then move further north if you are Italian, and you start in Southie and move to Kwinzee and further south down the Irish Riviera. True story: When our daughter was little my wife was working in the old Navy Yard in Charlestown. She had this Chucktown high school (that is a whole 'nuther story -- see "busing") girl coming in afternoons to do general office stuff, was some program to get girls to see what might be possible. She was the oldest of about 19 kids in her (very Irish) family so had some experience with children. My wife got her to babysit for our kids, she was very sweet and responsible. One evening I went to pick her up, she lived in a very small rowhouse in the old part of town, very industrial. Her dad was a laborer of some kind, no car, he walked to work or took the T. So anyway, we lived a few miles north of there, I was driving to our house, the girl was looking all around taking everything in. A coupla weeks later I think it might have been spring break or something, my wife decided to go to Nantucket for a week, asked this girl to come along to babysit, she agreed. Wife went down a day or two early with the kids, I was going to leave Fri after work, pick this girl up after school, drive down to Hyannis to catch the ferry. So I go get her, head south through Boston and she is kinda half catatonic, looking around. We are in Southie, just like maybe 2-3 miles south of where she lived, she said she had never seen this before, started asking me a little what things were, so I was pointing out various things, and as we drove downnacape (this is where a lot of people go for the weekend, you ask, "What did you do this weekend?" and the answer is, "Ah, nuttin, just went downnacape") I was describing the area. So anyway, we get to the ferry and get on, I give her a few $$ to get a snack or something, she is almost totally catatonic by then. I had some work to do, so did not pay her much attention, figured she was 17, old enough to look out for herself, hell even have 4 or 5 kids in that social structure. So we get to the island, wife picks us up and we drive out to the house. The girl had said about 3 words in the last 4 hours. She calls home to let her mom know she made it OK, we have supper, she goes to bed. Next morning we decide to drive out on the beach, we all go, it is a bit cool so she sits in the truck reading with the baby. I go check on them, the girl is crying, bawling, I try to figure out what is wrong, no success, send my wife over. She comes back and says the girl is homesick, she had NEVER BEEN OUT OF CHARLESTOWN BEFORE!!! She is 17 and had never been more than a mile or two from home until she came to our house to babysit! Then this adventure was like going to another planet. So that explained why she was so overwhelmed by the time we got into Boston, just over the bridge. Going downnacape and to the island was too much to handle. Amazing. So we discuss it, decide the girl needs to go back home, I take her into the boat, buy her a ticket, give her some money for a bus ticket, and leave her. She made it home OK. She babysit at our house a few more times, I think she then got into college at Bridgewater State or something, which was like 10 miles away, a major life event. So the program actually helped her, and I think the trauma of leaving, even for a day, showed her she could survive "away" from home. --R On 11/7/13 10:48 AM, Craig wrote: On Thu, 07 Nov 2013 10:33:17 -0500 Rich Thomas wrote: That can't be Wuhstuh. Boston winters are much less pleasant (or more unpleasant) as you have the damp wind off the ocean, and the usual 34F and rain or snow or lots of dirty wet snow around. Having lived in both places for 20+ years each, I would take Indiana winter over Boston winter, but much prefer a southern "winter." --R On 11/7/13 10:13 AM, Craig wrote: On Thu, 07 Nov 2013 08:03:23 -0500 Dan Penoff wrote: Exactly. What Alex said. Good luck! Having worked in education, both higher and lower, as well as having an undergraduate degree in the same, I can say with some level of confidence that most of the people I know/knew/worked with, especially at the college level, were intelligent, dedicated folks. You won't get far in higher education if you're not motivated or fail to produce. I loved the environment, but long term it didn't make sense for me for a lot if reasons. That being said, had I been younger I might have continued in that direction. There are plenty of people in education who know nothing of the "real world" in sort of a business sense, which is a detriment. You have experience in this area, which gives you a facet of knowledge and understanding that many career educators will never possess. Call it naïveté or just ignorance, you will definitely experience it in education. It's like it's own little universe for some... Again, best of luck! I have always like MA, especially the Boston area, of which I have relatives in and have worked in a great deal. Re: [MBZ] All alone again.
From: "Randy Bennell" Do you mean 1" and 2" of rain? .1 and .2 does not sound like it would make things very soggy. And, yes, we are not anxious to have snow either. It has been all around us I think but not here yet. Had a good Sunday doing yard work. Ran the mower around without the bagger and mulched a bunch of the leaves. Got the leaf blower out and sucked up a bunch of the leaves that were in the areas under shrubs etc that could not be mowed. Drained the rain barrel which had about a 2 inch thick plug of ice on the top. Etc. Was tired at the end of the day. Still have things I want to do outside so hope that the weather holds for a bit more. Want to change the oil and grease the snow blower etc. Most winters it is used very little but I like to keep it in good shape and ready to go in case we get a blizzard that buries us. Most of the time I just shovel the walks and we don't have a big driveway - garage opens onto the back lane so not a whole lot to clear most of the time. Would also like to fire up the generator and make sure it runs etc. Always things to do and some get put off to the next year if it snows too soon. Wilton, you just get up too early! I'll be leveling the concrete floor in the guest house in preperation for laying laminate floor strips and tiles. Slight moisture today, is supposed to be a good rain, hasn't happened yet. We did take the Cessna to the SE corner of OK Saturday to look at the fall foliage - see the Kiamichi panoramas at http://photosynth.net/UserProfilePage.aspx?user=okdonn&content=Synths#1(sorry, will require Silverlight).
