[MBZ] Another CHEAP SL

2007-08-06 Thread Glenn Brown
All the talk about the CHEAP SL, although a bit out of date I thought I'd
post the values of the MB 450SL according to the SL Market Newsletter
(08/09/04) . . . courtesy of D. Quinn:

Condition 1 $21,000
Condition 2 $12,789
Condition 3 $ 9,160
Condition 4 $ 5,780
Condition 5 $ 1,700
Condition 6 $ 800

Condition 1 - Restored in maximum potential professional standards.
Condition 2 - Preserved examples with minor wear.
Condition 3 - Worn original with higher mileage & repaint.
Condition 4 - Driveable needing only minor work to be reliable but
deteriorated and incorrectly rebuilt or modified.
Condition 5 - Needs complete restoration.
Condition 6 - Seriously damaged.

As I well know, as I've tried to sell my '76 (possibly a condition 2
example) for two years without success as I believe these values are only
pertinent for those who are specifically looking for this model. Note: I
know of one owner of a completely restored ("The Star" centerfold example)
who was supposedly offered considerably more than the highest price on this
list and did not accept it.
Hope this helps.

It seems like the 380SL Gods are giving us bottom feeders a shot at driving
in a nice 107 2 seater! This one has been converted to the double row
timing chain and has less than 90K miles on it with a straight body and fair
interior. Ad says it runs great. It does have a salvage title and needs
some front suspension work, probably will be a nice one with minimal
investment.

Yeah, prices seem to have dropped a bit recently. Gas prices?

Our 450 SL, which was for sale for more than 2 years, was in the
3-4 range. No repaint, but everything working. And, IMHO, mostly
_correctly_ rebuilt and modified! :-)

Yeah, the higher you go the smaller the market. Ours did finally
sell, but I think we might have gotten lucky too. The ads didn't
do it, it was a drive-by that noticed the sign in the parked car.

One reason I'm playing with this condition 4-5 (?) 380 SL. Should be
easier to sell when I'm done 'cause I'm aiming at it being a bit
cheaper.

Very odd that it's got four different colors of paint on
its various bits. What a hodge-podge. Still, if paint were
in your future that wouldn't be bad. Looks like it's missing
the fog lights.

But I've got mine already. Feel free to get yours too!
I drove mine to work today, it runs pretty well. Needs a
lot of fiddly stuff, though. At least the cuffs match the
collar!

Washed, it's still fairly shiny. My wife parked next to
it today at lunch, and complemented me on my "good deal".
Hoo-hah! Let me write that down...

She thinks the overall paint effect is better than the 450.
Though this one has many more flaws, the rust 'bulletholes'
in the 450's trunk lid were weighted high in her book.

Was it Jill whose husband dubbed her She Who Must Be Annoyed, or was
that some other WA resident, like maybe Casey's wife?

Mine indeed, but if you ask me, _many_ of these occasionally
delightful creatures deserve that sobriquet.

I suspect that was our p-whipped colleague up in Seattle, Clay. Apparently
he can't fart without first getting a signed release from the missus. I
think she's a lawyer, so he knows better than to challenge the arrangement.
It's sad, really. Pray for him.

She flew out to lake flacid this morning, so I have been able to pass
wind with extreme prejudice. I have put in an order with Rusty, and
will be scouring Benz Friendz for items to post on eBay. Boy will I
be in huge trouble when she returns

If you budget for a decent paint job, that brings it up over $5K and not
much of a bargain anymore.
