No, the Cats were beside the head in the engine compartment in '75 and '76.
They cooked everything there. The solution is to get exhaust manifolds from
another model year and the associated front section of the exhaust pipe.

Yes, there was a campaign by Mercedes to remove them because they would fail 
internally and destroy the turbo and engine, I believe. The material was some 
sort of catalyst-like honeycomb, I think.

Weren't the trap oxidizers removed under recall, or am I imagining that? I 
definitely remember hearing that removing them was what most people did.

My '85 CA version 300TD has a trap oxidizer under the hood and several
other unique parts that were hard to find/expensive.  I finally sold it to
Kyle Arola, former lister.

especially on the injection system. Makes for one heck of a conflagration when 
they spring a leak and shoot gasoline all over the place.

FYI, the “pre cats” are in the engine compartment, not under the car.
