[MBZ] Bad front end noise

2014-09-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
End of last week my '95 E300 started making a bad knock from the front end,
only during low speed turns. Tonight I finally had time to crawl under and
take a look. It's bad.

My lovely 7 year-old daughter cranked the steering wheel back and forth
(engine off) while I observed, and we found a bad joint at one end of the
drag link.

So Sapphire is grounded until a new drag link is installed. Momma is
picking one up tonight on her way home from an errand. I'll be trying to
install it tonight, probably feeding the mosquitoes as I go.

Check the tie rod ends and the steering damper too -- one of the
leading causes of dead tie rod ends is a bad steering damper allowing
them to get beaten to death.

Check the idler arm bushings as well -- if the idler arm moves up and
down at all, they are shot.

Wife brought home the part about 9 p.m., just finished installing a few
minutes ago. Special tool 201.589.133.304 made all the difference, easily
popped off those joints.

Part is Moog, made in Greece. We'll see how long she lasts...
