What I’m finding is that the xenon projectors are industry standard sizes, so
to convert my S430 low beams to xenon is pretty straightforward.
Open up the headlight assemblies, remove the halogen projectors, install the
xenon projectors, wire the ballasts and button everything up.
From what I am reading the Mercedes stock optics are really crappy compared to
everyone else’s. Audi seems to have the best, then BMW and others. It’s
simple to find a set of projectors on places like eBay for $75. You cna buy
better optics if you want them - just drop the lenses in when you mount the
projectors. Ballasts can be had for $30-$50/each, and there are retrofit
wiring harnesses so the canbus system stays happy.
In the case of my car I’ll have to go into the DAS and tell the car it’s got
xenons, for what reason I’m not sure. Haven’t dug that deeply into it yet.
I’ll post whatever I find out as I go along. This is a heck of a lot easier
and cheaper than retrofitting Euro headlights….
