Temperature data only goes back to the 1700's, there were no thermometers
before that.
"Tampering", as the climate change deniers are so fond of quoting, in data that
has been "adjusted" to account for the known errors in the National Standards
Institute thermometers used prior to about 1950, and all the Farhenheit data
has been converted to Centigrade for comparison purposes (we have been
officially metric since 1911)
A few data points have either been estimated or removed, usually because they
are obviously wrong (twenty degrees lower that the preceeding and following
days, for instance) or a transcription error -- up to the 70's all data was
hand written from visual observation of a thermometer, errors do happen. Most
common is to transpose the digits and write 54 and 45, for instance.
Claims the data has been "altered" to prove a point are bullfeathers. I've
been periferally involved in the climate change discussion, including data work
at Forestry Canada in the early 90's, and the data is a solid as data can be
under the circumstances.
Climate scientists at FCOR didn't have an agenda to "prove" global warming,
they were (and I expect are still) dedicated to sustainable forestry, it's a
major industry in Canada (and elsewhere), and their goals are to keep the trees
growing into harvestable timber. Takes a century to grow a decent sized
conifer up there, it's fairly important to plant something that will not die
after 20 if you want anything to harvest on the other end.
