Re: [MBZ] Diesel vs gas mileage
So, what then does CDI mean as in 320CDI starting in 2005? I thought we were talking about gasoline. CDI is a common- rail DI engine. Those have a single high-pressure fuel supply rail and gate-valve injectors, solenoid actuated I believe. Those have been around awhile. The OM352 in my Unimog is direct injection. MB has made both DI and IDI engines forever. The solenoid control of a CDI engine allows for multiple small fuel pulses at idle, resulting in engines that idle nearly as quietly as gasoline engines. What they choose to sell in the USA is all about our charming marketdroids and not about the the technology. As a datapoint about the industry, it is useless. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Diesel vs gas mileage
Common rail direct injection.it's been out here since 98. There's a new-ish gasoline injection system called FSI or something. Uses a direct injection principle I thinksupposed to improve fuel economy somewhatdon't know much about it but I see it around often. Jeff Zedic

Now that the discussion has turned into a comparision of gas Vs diesel prices I guess I'll report on the prices around here (Va) - unleaded gas is around $2.45 with diesel even higher at $2.49. Still not sure what I'll do with the E320 Vs E300D question. Losing .$.05 cents per gallon plus a $5k lower purchase price makes the E320 attractive until I consider repair prices. I'm confident I can work on the diesel but I'm not so sure about the gas engine. Maybe I'll flip a coin. Re: [MBZ] Diesel vs. Gas
Federal incentives promote biodiesel U.S. biodiesel production is expected to double this year as a direct result of lofty oil prices and increasing government support, industry officials said this week. Energy Department officials said biodiesel could make up 10 percent of U.S. fuel within a decade. That percentage would put consumption at about 5 billion gallons per year, said Amber Thurlo Pearson, spokeswoman for the National Biodiesel Board. However, without government incentives, biodiesel is much more costly to produce. Depending on the material used, the fuel could cost 75 cents to a dollar more per gallon than petrodiesel, some analysts said. Energy legislation enacted earlier this month sustained tax credits for fuel distributors who blend biodiesel with petrodiesel and fuel stations that have biodiesel pumps available to customers. "The tax incentives go a long way toward making biodiesel competitive, and the high oil prices really do help," said Leland Tong, an energy consultant with Marc-IV Consulting in Kansas City, Mo., who works with the National Biodiesel Board. Further government regulations effective next year will mandate diesel producers limit sulfur in oil to 97 percent, further encouraging the use of biodiesel. In March, seven Energy Plus 24 stations in Indiana began carrying B-5, a fuel blended from 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent regular diesel. Twenty-seven Kentucky retailers also offer biodiesel blends (E&ENews PM, Aug. 5). With an increased demand and a market price similar to oil, industry officials and scientists alike are exploring newer ways to produce and market biodiesel. Researchers at Capital Technologies International in Pittsburgh are developing a process for producing biodiesel fuel that results in few emissions. The group will use plant and animal oils from partner Valley Proteins as well as waste from area restaurants to infuse diesel. Capital Technologies chief executive officer Richard Jackson said that their technology "is better, cheaper, faster and safer," than other biodiesel programs. Processing will begin next year at Valley Proteins retired Neville Island plant, officials said (Pamela Gaynor, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Aug. 16). -- RLG On 8/16/05, andrew strasfogel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Like I said, IT'S ALL CLINTON'S FAULT!!! > > On 8/16/05, Gabriel S. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Seems like California always gets screwed becase we > > can afford it? > > > > --- Sunil Hari <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > > diesel here was $2.50/gal on saturday. > > > > > > On 8/15/05, Gabriel S. > > > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > I feel your pain paul...i took a trip to the napa > > > > valley this weekend got reamed for fuel...i never > > > > noticed the increase in diesel price until now! > > > > --- LT Don <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > > > > > > No, Kleb ... buy stock in or open your own > > > GreaseCar > > > > > franchise. > > > > > > > > > > On 8/13/05, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Diesel Vs Gas Choice
Thursday Diesel at my fav station was $2.159 Unleaded was $2.249. Friday Diesel went to $2.369 Unleaded to $2.399 Ouch SO drives 100 + a day and right now until I get her new 240D Vacuum problems fixed I'm putting about 200+ on my 240D. Some IDIOT Indy that the PO used decided to remove all the Vacuum lines off the Throttle controller so the Tranny does wired things. Got a replacement set at the PnP Friday but didn't have time to install them yesterday. Car has been setting up for 6 mts. White Exterior Red MBTex interior in Good shape. No Rust Owner is now in an Assisted Care Fac. Gave the car to Daughter to do what she wanted. Had a 3 Grand price tag on it. Talked them down to 2 Grand. Drives good will need shocks in the near future. A/C (134a) needs belt but did blow cold air before Old belt broke while I was test driving. All the belts need replacement. Monday New Oil and filter change and belts then SO can drive to her heart content. Russ W. '83 240D 278k mi '83 240D 135k mi Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: did you all just go up again today? [MBZ] Diesel Vs Gas Choice
Hi All, Normally, this would be a no-brainer - I'd buy the diesel - but with the increase in diesel fuel and the price differential between E300Ds and comparable E320s, I'm having trouble seeing the best car to buy. Here's the deal: my wife has a 4 day/week, 100 mile round trip commute. She wants something safe, comfortable and economical for the drive. My 1st choice is a 96-99 E300D but they're pretty scarce and when I find one they have a ~ $5000 premium over a comparable gas E320. Also, the price of diesel keeps going up and last I checked was around $2.40 - $2.50. So, I have to factor in: -- the rising cost of diesel fuel (of course, gas is getting really high also) -- the price premium for Gas Vs. Diesel vehicles -- the expected higher maintanence costs for the Gas engine -- the longer lifespan & reduced maint of a diesel -- most 96-99 E300Ds are high mileage. -- ?? Anything else I've forgotten? What do ya'll think??? Should I consider a E320 or keep looking for a reasonable 96-99 E300D Thanks for your insight, Sincerely, Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 78 240D) A Blood Test for your oil - www.youroil.net For Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Stuff http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm For my Paint Job Info

Depends on what you mean by "last," I suppose. If "lasting" includes starting in the winter without doing a ring job, I could see it...a gasoline engine can lose a lot more compression before it becomes unstartable.
