The first link is much more in line with what I am doing. The link I
posted for M-Series Rebuild and Repower shows what I dream of being able
to do with my M37.

IIRC, a naturally-aspirated 617 and stick-shift transmission are 657#.

I don't know the torque numbers for the old flathead but they were not
impressive engines even new. They were originally designed in 1938 I
believe. I am almost certain the diesel will have better torque numbers
at all RPM ranges.

The flathead is huge and heavy. I can't imagine the Merc engine could
weigh more than a 100 pounds or so more..There is nothing aluminum on
the flathead other than the carb.LOL

The original gears are 5.83's and 4.89's are said to be available.I
have yet to find any and I have been searching for years.
Regearing is best accomplished with an OD and big radial tires. Ride is
improved dramatically with the big tires.

They drive extremely well really. Owners of Cummins and V8 repowered
M37's report they handle very well at 70MPH while towing.

Re: [MBZ] Dodge diesel conversions, Was: 300D Dodge Dakota

2007-07-09 Thread Curt Raymond

IIRC the na 617 is 90something hp and the turbo is around 120, not sure of the
torque numbers.
Seems like the torque numbers might be the tough side, I imagine though they're
low hp the original 6 had good torque.
Some time ago I postulated putting a 616 into a Jeep CJ3B. Both put out around
72hp but it was speculated that the added weight might not help with the 3b's
economy any.
I'm with you that the Mercedes engine will rev alot higher, 5500 IIRC.

Is regearing the M37 not an option?

How driveable at higher speeds do you think one of these would be? Meaning if
the frontend was only designed for 55mph how would it do with 65?

Hi Phillip,
I have done a ton of research and thinking on the best swap for the
 M37.
The 4BTA is actually the very best choice as far as a hard working,
strong pulling, great mileage choice. The downfall is that a well used
4BT(not even the aftercooled BTA) is at least a couple thousand
 dollars.
A custom built Ranger overdrive unit at $1500(there are 2 in the
 world)
can be used to couple to the original SM420 tranny and with the 5.83
diffs and 39 inch tall tires will allow a crusing RPM of 1900 at 60MPH.

Perfect for the Cummins.
another choice is a modern overdrive manual tranny with custom adapters
 or
the easiest choice but least strong is a 700R4 automatic built to the
gills to hold up to the torque.
Any of the above choices are way too costly for me so...
The original engine is a 215ci flathead 6 governed at 3200RPM and runs
into a 4 speed trans with a 1:1 output to a divorced transfer case.
The flathead puts out [EMAIL PROTECTED] and 94hp at 3400rpm200 above
 the
governor.
I am not familiar enough to spout off #'s for the HP specs of a 5cyl
 MBZ
diesel but I am certain they are better than that and I know they will
rev WAY higher so I would have no need for an overdriven
transmission. The MB auto would be perfect for the job.
The 6 would be nicer for the power but the 5 would fit much better(a
slant 6 Dodge motor will fit in one) and they are much more common in
the PnP yards around here. I can always pick up a rusty 300D for a few
hundred bucks here in the land of salt and rust. I plan on using it as
a commuter rather than a dedicated work truck now anyway.
