[MBZ] Fuel prices here in Los Alamos

2007-11-21 Thread Craig McCluskey
Coming home this evening, I noticed that regular gas jumped 4 cents from
$3.059 to $3.099 and that diesel jumped 14 cents from $3.409 to $3.549.

With that, I'd be better off driving a gas car that got better than 20 mpg
than our diesel.

I've been thinking the same. As the "Camry" gets 32+ and is well under
mileage on lease which will soon be up, I'm thinking of taking the winter to
have some cosmetic work done on my "daily" 123. At 322K it's due for a
little pampering and TLC.

I'm still debating to run one of the cars with a WVO conversion next summer.
What'll probably happen is I sell the '84 to finance the work on the others.
By the time spring returns and the lease is up on the Camry I hope to have
all three '85s taking their turns.

I passed through Asheville about a year-and-a-half ago, on the way to
Hendersonville to visit the breeder of our GSD.

Great minds think alike. I was about to say one needs to own some fast food
outlets to provide an internal supply

I agree. Either that or there'll be some type of bureaucratic regulation to
screw it up!

My situation is that I have "my own" supply of waste oil. With four food
service outlets I hauled away eight 35# containers of oil every week. I've
got about 600 gallons of filtered WVO (120+ containers) in the garage to
decide what to do with.

I think that running cars on free/cheap WVO may be a short-lived
phenomenon. With diesel prices what they are, the market for WVO to
make bio-diesel is surging. What restaurants used to pay to have
hauled away is now something they are becoming able to sell to the

Has anybody tried using midgrade?
I don't believe my 2.3-16 has a knock sensor, but I don't notice any
difference with 15 gallons of premium (92 octane) and 4 gallons of
regular (87 octane) in the tank. I assume the mix is somewhere around
90-91 pump octane rating. I might start topping it off with 89 octane
midgrade and see if any ping starts creeping in or mpg starts dropping.
I averaged almost 26.5 mpg this summer in the 16v, which is better than
I can hope for from the 300SD in local driving.

listen to the old 5cyls. hum away like sewing machines."
I don't drive these old Diesels just for the economy. Diesel is going
to have to get a lot higher than gasoline before I switch. Of course,
I am driving a later 124 most of the time though

2007-11-24 Thread Allan Streib
Diesel is down to $3.49 from $3.59 here, this week. Fuel prices are
VERY localized here -- in a 50 mile radius there can be swings of
$0.20 or more per gallon. Always pays to be attentive and top off if
you're in an area with lower prices.
