A friend had a 91 galant vr4, which in and of itself looked like a boring
econobox. the vr4 was all wheel drive, all wheel steer, 16v 2.0L turbo.
His was heavily modified under the hood, getting 340 horse at the wheels.

Putting an AWD car on a dyno is done how?

With the popularity of racing AWD vehicles, I'd imagine there's something 
out there safer. 

I never saw his galant done. Some DSM (think eclipse) club of crazy people
(something like the bounty hunters for 5.0 mustangs) had some sort of 
probably extremely unsafe method of doing it.
