Jeff Zedic Toronto 87 300TD 83 300D needs engine...hmmm maybe from a 123.193?? Jeff, Now why would you want to put an engine from a wagon into a sedan? Actually now that my wagon has a smashed front end it is the perfect time to pull the engine and swap it with the one from your old equipment transporter. The engine in my car is getting a bit tired and has lots of leaks. Re: [MBZ] Galvanized steel in cars
Allan, The problem with the older Toyota truck beds was that they put a seam in front of and behind the wheel area and it wasn't properly sealed. In fact, there should have been no seam at all! When they went to a one piece box, rust was exponentially reduced. Also, the galvanealed process was done later. 89 or so Jeff Zedic Toronto 87 300TD 83 300D

This is a process developed by Toyota in the late 80's that produced a sandwich-like construction of galvanized steel in the midcdle, with a layer on either side of a high zinc content alloy metal. They claimed that the higher zinc content prevented corrosion. Judging by the rotted condition of a 1987 Toyota truck I used to own, and have observed in many others of that era, I would say that claim is to be viewed with some skepticism (either that or they did not introduce it in their truck line until later). [MBZ] Galvanized steel in cars
There has been a thread discussing coated steel in the bodies of MB's and some talk of the 210 not using galvanized steel. Body Engineering is my profession so I feel pretty confident in saying that I doubt that any new cars sold in the US today use uncoated steels in their exterior sheet metal components. Industry standard is that all sheet metal which has an interface to the outside elements is coated. There are generally two types of coatings , 'Galvanized' and 'Galvaneel' steel. I'm not a materials expert so I can't really comment on the differences. The coatings are applied to the steel before the parts are pressed. Bodies are not dipped in zinc. The real issue with the newer cars is the quality and quantity of the coatings which are applied. There was a big push in the 80's and early nineties to improve the corrosion performance of vehicles. There has been a more recent push to take cost out of the vehicle. Thus thinner coatings on the base sheet metal. I hope this adds clarity to the issue and not further confusion. Ralph Wasserbaech
