nope.  That is how Pu'u O'o started.   See the first link in the prior 
email.   I got to see the fountain on Jan 3, 1983, and for several more 
days.  As I recall, HVO said it was over 200' high.

Have not found the exact location on a map, but it is near Pahoa.  The 
pool at the Puu o'o  vent sunk, filling underground tubes, and this 
resulted in a breakout in the Leilani Village area.  Apparently Madame 
Pele is not happy with the pakalolo growers union in the Pahoa area 
(Puna district).On a Star Trek theme on StarWars "May the Forth be 
with you" day,   Harry Kim, the former CD coordinator for Hawaii county 
(island) is now the Mayor of Hawaii County!  Go Harry  He is the real 
life namesake and inspiration for the Harry Kim character on Star Trek.

Pu'u o'o is the longest eruption in the recorded history if Kilauea.  It 
started with a spectacular fountain on Jan 3, 1983, and we were there to 
see it.   People ran around where we were staying in Puna to tell 
everyone about it, so we drove up to the highway junction and watched 
the fountain.

"January 3, 2018 marked the 35st anniversary of the Pu`u `O`o eruption 
on the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano. It has the distinction of 
being the longest-lived historical rift zone eruption at Kilauea. It is 
also the most voluminous (>3 km^3 ) and one of the most compositionally 
variable (5.7-10.1 wt% MgO) in the Kilauea historic record.


This on-going eruption has had many different phases and types of 
activity over it's long life and continuous to amaze with its 
persistence. It has produced a broad field of lava flows that have 
buried over 120 sq km of the volcano's south flank and poured into the 
Pacific Ocean, adding more than 230 hectares of new land to the island. 
In 2014 it sent lavas far to the NE, a first for the eruption, extending

   Lavas from this eruption have unfortunately destroyed several 
communities and numerous man-made structures along the south coast of 
the Big Island of Hawaii, including 189 houses, a National Park Service 
Visitor Center at Waha`ula, a church, a store, the Waha'ula Heiau (a 700 
year old Hawaiian place of worship), and many other ancient Hawaiian 
sites. The coastal highway in this part of the Big Island has been 
closed for 13 years, as flows covered 14 km of it with lava now as deep 
as 35 m."

My uncle had a place at Kapoho.  It was burned and covered by lave in a 
lava flow from Mauna Loa.  I think that eruption was in the 70s.
