Re: [MBZ] High Volume, Low Pressure Spray Gun Kit

I think they'd probably be okay for small projects. I think once you get into
trying to paint anything bigger than a breadbox (does anybody have a breadbox
anymore? Now I want a breadbox) the shortish hose would be annoying.

I'm already thinking I may get some spray bombs for my 240D as I've about run
out of warm weather for doing a good roller job. I've got no space in my garage
nor does it have heat...

No, suggested that one of those cheapie HVLP sprayers might work OK, and
yesterday saw that HF unit on sale for a reasonable $$. Your points are
well taken, but it seems like it could be an option. Perhaps someone
will give it a try and report back.

I know some guys who use those type of units for spraying woodwork
projects, they are fairly happy with them for what they are.

So far I've been pleased with the rattlecan job I did on the
boat trailer. We'll see how it holds up, though. (Hey, it's
a boat trailer!)

Would spraying rattle can clear coat over the rattle can paint job be a good
idea? I have an old Ford 150 trash truck that needs something if I can
expect to sell it for more than $200.

I've definately got to do a little grind and shoot on a few spots that are of
high importance. I think I'll see about sanding just enough to remove the
clearcoat everywhere else and leave it like that for the winter. In the spring
I plan to do a better job...

The best laid plans and all that.

[MBZ] High Volume, Low Pressure Spray Gun Kit

2008-10-09 Thread Rich Thomas

$68 at HF, this might be good for painting the car? Maybe better than
the foam roller method? This is about the same as a Campbell Hausfeld,
Rockler, and some others I have seen.

No I don't think it'll be any better than the roller method and is quite likely
worse. Based on other HF tools I've bought I expect it to be quite fragile, I
doubt it has any kind of water trap and it'll need a good degreasing before you
can use it. Its also a real small can and will need frequent refilling. Might
be okay for one panel at a time but I don't see any advantage over a roller or
rattle cans for that matter.

Either way if you want a really good (better than 20') paint job you need to
spend a BUNCH of time on prep work. Really good prep work can be painted with a
roller to give just as smooth a finish as when shot with a gun in a similar
amount of time and in a more confined space. Poor (or even just average) prep
will give you crappy results no matter how its painted.

No matter what you paint with if you want an amazing finish its paint and sand,
paint and sand. I didn't do hardly any prep on my car's hood and still managed
to put ~20 hours into it most of which was prep grinding rust and filling
dents. The actual paint maybe took 4 hours.

I recently amazed myself with a can of Rust-Oleum spray paint. I got a
passenger-side exterior mirror for my Vanagon, but it needed to be red
instead of white. I bought a can of red Rust-Oleum, and as luck would
have it the color was a dead perfect match, at least to my eye.

I sprayed the mirror and was just stunned that it looked as good as
factory to me. Not a 20-foot job at all, this looks good standing right
next to it.

I realize there's probably some differences painting a larger panel, but
I was truly surprised at how well it turned out. Time well tell how
well it holds up.
