[MBZ] Horrible noise - And the WINNER IS ....

2008-06-02 Thread Bill R
.. Peter, from far away exotic S. Africa [right?]. We held a memorial for
the small pieces that still existed of the left motor mount. Motor mounts
and two new air cleaner brackets banished the wee folks with sledge hammers
instantly [well, after an hour labor.] It even shifts better [probably
related] and the temp gauge is working better [quite probably not related].
$89 to fill up the tank on the way home, so new motor mounts didn't help
that at all. The sun even shone more brightly on the way home . Next is
what appears to be the original shocks on the car. 300K and the things just
about give up. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

If you want any hope of getting hundreds of thousands of miles on
the replacements, it's Bilstein/Boge/Sachs for you.

Yeah - I already checked out the Bilstein Comfort shocks on Rusty's site. I
think I paid that much for a standard shock many rears ago.

Not to mention the correct ride and handling that is only available
with the OE shocks. My preference ie Bilstein, because that was OE
on most, if not all the MBs I have owned/driven.

This is why our '90 300D 2.5 is named "Rattled" - as in past tense.
One motor mount was totally collapsed when I bought it - wife was
certain that I was out of my mind for trading good money for a car
that made that kind of racket. She's amazed at how nice it is with new
mounts.

Trashed motor mounts were the first thing I replaced in my
just-departed '91 300D. Nice and easy, with near-instant payback. But
for rewards its hard to beat a transmission rebuild with everything
working well after the pressures are dialed in right!

I'm still waiting for that. I still get a 1-2-3-3-4 shift, and occasionally
a 1-2-3-4-3-4 shift pattern. Except for that the thing is in pretty good
shape as long as the frame welds hold.
