[MBZ] Insurance Big Brother Widget?

2013-09-26 Thread M. Mitchell Marmel
Had a fender-bender in late February, and my
insurance rate shot up sharply now that it's time
to renew.

I have an opportunity to cut my insurance rates
in half by having one of those Big Brother
widgets attached to the OBD-II in the E420 for a
few months. Opinions? Has anyone tried this?

Progressive dislikes acceleration, in any direction.
They ding you for a 'hard brake' at 7mph/second.
If you stop for a yellow light, you WILL be penalized.
If you routinely run yellow/pink lights, don't corner hard, and drive a
diesel, you'll probably do OK.

Depends on how paranoid you are I suppose. If I had one I'd be very careful
about who I let drive my car though. Loan the car out, friend does something
stupid and up goes your rate...

I'd put a note on the dash reminder, Big Brother IS watching just as a
reminder.

I have not tried it. Recent surveys have shown that it is not a popular option
if offered, no matter the savings. Something like 60% of those asked, there
was no way they would take that offer. Smacked of NSA spying and other
intrusions on privacy. TSA can poke fingers in your orifices if you fly, but
not in your own car.

We are traveling down a slippery slope by giving ourselves over to the computer
overlords. One day we will no longer have the ability to our own private
thoughts or choices. We will live in the bosom of the overlords with all the
entitlements, or be feral camps living in the wild lands.
