Yeah, if you know it to be 100% clean but if it is anything like mine then
it is full of crap just waiting to blow out onto that freshly washed duco.
That and blowing dust off the ground onto the freshly washed car. Like I
said pure genius.
On the rare occasion that my cars get a clean I use a chamois to get rid of
the excess water. Seeing I only wash the cars every three months or so it is
not a big deal.

In a prior life, we washed Army vehicles with a fire hose, literally. We
had driven those things through streams, shallow bogs, and small ponds
maneuvering while maintaining cover. Those much more experienced than me
knew exactly where to direct the hose to blast out caked-on mud in the many
nooks and crannies. These things were OD flat, so they didn't shine, but
they seemed to get pretty clean at the old wash rack.

Well, please do remember that there are pressure washers and then there are
pressure washers. Most of the little
ones will do no harm and may not even clean sufficiently to please you. The
commercial ones may remove the paint
from your car. I have one of the lesser models - 4HP B&S supposed to produce
1600# of pressure. Works OK but not
likely to take the paint off. I would like to have a bigger and better one but
likely would not use it to wash my
car. I recall trying to clean grease off of an auto engine that I was
rebuilding a few years ago. The pressure
washer wasn't making much headway and I really wished I had more power to cut
right through to the metal. I
wouldn't have minded at all if it had removed the paint in that case. I also
know someone who ran a mobile wash
company for a while. They had pressure washers that used very hot water and
some that mixed in sand like a
sandblaster. Those would clean anything and were mostly used in messy
commercial cleanups.

Others have made similar comments. However, what do you think is used to
get cars cleaned in touchless car washes? All of the equipment in
carwashes is similar to a pressure washer. The only question is the
angle of the nozzles and the volume and PSI. The problem occurs when
the nozzles get clogged and this changes the PSI or the "spread" of the
water/chemical through the nozzle.

In my experience, pressure washers work just fine on cars. That said, the
half-brained person just needs to realize that the higher pressure your
washer, the finer the point and the closer you get the more likely you are
to clean more than you wanted.

Personally, I've used them many times over the years and the only time I
really did a good one was with a 10-15 year old CRX with plastic(and who
knows what kind of paint). It already had some flaking off, and the
pressure washer took good chunks out. Otherwise, no issues. I did use mine
to remove some fedex decals from my van when I was done working for them.
THAT took a while. Those suckers are on there good. I ended up having to
use the pencil point at about 2 inches away for a lot of it and remove
little pieces at a time.

Here in Ohio, they won't let you use a coin-op car wash if you don't chew
tabacco and have a gun rack in your rear window. However, marrying your
cousin let's you get in without the gun rack. Being at least 100 lbs
overweight helps too.

In all seriousness, my time working for BP taught me that the largest single
expense for a coin-op car wash is water. That is why all the water they use
has been recycled from the guy in line before you. Stations use fresh water
for the rinse cycle, but only if the tanks need topping off. Try collecting
some of the the rinse water in an old 2-litre coke bottle towards the end of
the cycle. It's disgusting.

That's a little different. I was talking about just
regular washing, as in exterior. I have pressure
washed engines and other components both in and out of

I can't begin to imagine what a pressure washer would

Understand that in Florida a pressure washer is pretty
much a standard yard implement, like a rake or shovel.
With the crap that gets on your walls, sidewalk and
screened enclosure over your pool ("pool cage") you
pretty much have to have a pressure washer to get
things clean.

That being said, I have never seen anyone down here
use one on a car. I have a fairly high powered one
(6.5 HP B&S, 3500 psi) that is strong enough to cut a
2x4 in half, and I was amazed that they mentioned
"washing" your car with the "low pressure" nozzle
provided.

And to get one around a tire? Yikes!

I thought it was the American way to use a pressure washer on anything
you can't clean with a leafblower.

I can't imagine anyone with half a brain in their head
getting a pressure washer anywhere near a car.

Better yet, don't use a pressure washer anywhere near a car at all!
They will force water through seals into the interior, cause
mysterious electrical gremlins under the hood, and strip the newer,
less-durable environmentally safe exterior paints right off.

[MBZ] Just saw this in Popular Machanics re: tires

2007-07-16 Thread Walt Lasher
Pressure washers used to be a high-ticket item, so they weren't that common.
Now they can be had for no more money than the tab for a pretty good
Saturday night's partying. I've got a couple, actually (pressure washers,
not bar tabs). Clean freaks beware! Car and tire manufacturers recommend
against using pressure washers to clean the sidewalls of car or truck
  tires. It's not the
high pressure that's really the problem - it's the high-frequency pulsations
caused by the style of pump used. The several-hundred-hertz fluctuation from
near-zero pressure to 1500 psi or more can damage the sidewall cords in your
tires.

So if you insist on using your pressure washer to clean your wheels and
tires, be careful not to get too close, especially if the nozzle of the
pressure washer is set to a narrow angle.

Interesting. Never even entered my mind
