In a pinch I once used a hunk of Category 5 network cable.  A friend
declared it to have been the geekiest possible way I could have solved
that problem.

 I've tired of constantly replacing the rubber donuts, and am now using
 nylon cord/rope - 1/4 inch or so
 
How about coat hangers or baling   wire?
