[MBZ] Lock night

2012-08-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Got my 240D back from the Indy after having the tank strainer replaced. Its
better but I can tell we'll be doing the fuel filter flip here pretty regularly
for awhile. I'll get another extra set to have in the car.

Drove it to work today and when I went to get coffee I realized that neither
lock would work, so I ended up carrying my laptop into Dunkin Donuts with me
rather than leave it in an unlocked car.

Tonight when I got home I whipped the door panel off and had the handle and
lock out in less than 5 minutes. The lock was of course all skudged up with
lumps of old graphite. The worst part of the job was running a fine wire down
in where each lock wafer goes and cleaning out the accumulation. The brass
wafers wear a little too so I took a file and thinned them on the outside to
account for internal wear making the lock a little recalcitrant.

Overall the job took just over an hour. I'll need to do the other side later
on. When I do that I'll go back to this side and swap in another lock body I
found (after cleaning the one from the car) that has a working door over the
lock slot.

Anyway, still got done in time to start dinner before my wife got home.

Curt,

Why not just swap it with the door handle from the passenger side? That takes
all of five minutes and you get an almost new lock out of the deal...

You apparently missed the bit where I wrote "I realized that neither lock would
work".

If I need to pull both locks and fix both locks I figured starting with the
driver's lock would get me a working lock the most quickly...

I think the road salt we use here gets into the lock and helps to globber up
the graphite.

Sorry. I must have.

That was one of my favorite swaps - the driver's door lock gets grungy, so just
get the passenger side and swap them out...

Re: [MBZ] Lock night

2012-08-21 Thread Curt Raymond
In the end I want to have both locks working so I figure if I have to pull any
I want to fix both. It doesn't take that long. This is something I should have
done awhile ago.

I finally found (of course after I was all done) my bottle of good teflon lock
lubricant. When I have it apart again I'll clean all the graphite back out and
use that.
