But they don't say if he got the wheel off. They say he was hit by debris from
the wheel but do not say if he was
successful.
I really hope the poor devil got the wheel off so he doesn't have to do that
again. (But I do understand his
frustration. I've been tempted on occasion to do things I know I will regret
when working on vehicles.)

I'd rather put the others back on loose, put a long breaker bar
on the stuck nut, and drive forward. (assuming I were that
desperate)

2007-12-04 Thread EDWARD DENNIS
Hi,
As a grease rack apprentice at Z-Frank Chevrolet service center I rotated
tires at least twice a day. Every one of the lug nuts was brushed with white
grease. That was 1965 and I always do the grease on all lugs. We did not torque
back then and never had a complaint of loose or tight.

Re: [MBZ] Lug nut removal mistake

2007-12-04 Thread John M McIntosh
As a teenager I recall removal of a single lug nut from a 69 cadillac
out on the farm that took all day.

After rounding the nut off via crude use of vice-grips and a 4 foot
length of piping, I believe we resorted to using a hack saw and cold
chisel to split the nut.
Sadly there was no welding torch handy otherwise we would have tried a
bit of heat first. No guns, but likely one would have been used on the
idiot who air torqued it to infinity and beyond when they had
installed the new tires.

Now I have only knowledgeable folks install lug nuts with a torque
wrench, and then I double-check them when I get the vehicle home.

Having spent one pleasant afternoon shooting the crap
out of a junker car with my family, I am skeptical that
there was anything but lead spatter involved.

...Unless the lug nut is on the other side of the car. Even then probably
less overall damage than the shotgun.

Huh? Wouldn't you just drive backwards then for the same effect?

Ya know, I'm beginning to give serious thought to the construction
of a 'skid wrench' for emergency tire changes. It should be about
3' long, very stiff, and have something at the end to keep it from
digging into the ground.

And yes, if it's on the left side of the car, you drive backwards,
unless it's a 60's Mopar or a 70's Mazda. My brother had an old
(maybe '72-74) Mazda pickup (piston engine). I had quite a time
with the lug nuts, until I noticed that one of the left nuts moved
a bit and then seemed to get tighter. A careful inspection of the
exposed threads on the stud confirmed that it had left hand threads
on the left wheels. Did the Ford Courier have lefty lugs, or just
the Mazda badged ones?

Mitch.
