On Mac floppy drives it's been there since the first 128K Mac in 1984,
if you want to get pedantic about it. ;)

One of the few things I really don't like on the Mac is the stupid
stuff Wozniak and Jobs do to " protect" us from the mechanical and
software workings of the computer. I find it more than a little
condescending, but tolerate it because otherwise they are much nicer
than PCs.

A local "computer guy" who does a column once a week in the local paper
was blown away by the OS X desktop on his new Imac. Could a told him
that -- Windows has always looked like a high school science project to
me!

The hole for the unbent paper clip is present on every drive I've ever
seen that didn't have a eject button-- there HAS to be a way to remove
the disk when the power is off.

Which hole has existed on Macs for both the floppy and CD since the late
'80s.

Falsimundo!! My G4's Superdrive has a litle spring loaded cover over it's maw
which can be opened just by pulling on it's face a bit. I just lifted the
corner of the scotch-tape like covering and opened 'er up. Which exposed the
good
old paperclip manual release hole.

Dumb design. no question.
