Do you have the "master", or just the "valet" key? I don't remember
with the wagons, but on the sedans the glove box and the trunk open
only with the "master" while the door and ignition work with either.

The master is supposed to have a squarish head and the valet has a
rounder head. The more certain way to tell is by looking at the key
itself. Hold the key so you can see the flat side. There is a channel
that runs the length of the "active" part of the key. The width of
this channel is the different.

A narrow channel (1.3mm, .05in) is a valet key.

A wide channel (2mm, .08in) is a master key.

Again, I know this to be true on sedans - but I don't know which key
is needed for a wagon hatch!

Have only owned for 1 month. Central locking is inoperative and I have not
investigated this yet. Even at 35 degrees it seems to cold to work outside
fo too long.

How long have you owned the car? It could have been buggered by a PO.

I had a problem with my rear hatch jammed shut, and in opening it the
tech did something to the locking mechanism that disabled key access to the
hatch! The lock moves with central vacuum but the manual lock will forever
be inoperative.

There is ONLY one key pattern for a Mercedes but there are Master and
supplemental keys.

This will illustrate the Master and Supplemental key.

Purchase a proper NEW key from Mercedes. If that doesn't solve the
problem then it gets more expensive.

You do NOT want to ever be in a situation where you lose the ONLY key.
That can cost $500-1000 if you're not lucky!

DO NOT expect a key made by a locksmith to work reliably for any length
of time! Depend ONLY on a factory steel key.

Was there more than one key required for this car?

Not as manufactured.

Or does it just need a lotta wiggling and wd40?

Possibilities:

What you said

Lock was changed and now requires different key

Lock was damaged

Lock is more sensitive to worn key than all others
