I actually have a letter from the county saying that I don't need any
permits to build anything on our land. We are having a 24' x 40' garage
built beside the house now - no other contact with the "authorities" other
than the inquiry that resulted in the letter.

The garage is to keep the rodents out of the car wiring, and to get the
gardening tools, mowers, etc. out of the hangar, maybe even the wood
working tools.

Good point. Who needs permits for outbuildings when you have a 14 mile
driveway? Around here, if you have 40 acres and claim the outbuilding is for
your farm, there's no requirement for a permit to build, but you might need an
electrical permit to wire it for lights etc.

Permit for grading and drainage, because the EPA has dictated any water
shed area has to have an engineered study before the drainage can be
modified... [go figure... the government in action.. ]

Then... because the building covers ground by virtue of having a roof...
the run off has to be calculated and accounted for when it rains [The
government didn't get the memo that this is the desert and it only rains
0.20 inches per year... ]

Then... because it has a flush toilet.. which goes into a septic
system.. I

have to have an "Approved Plan and Installation for Septic"

The list goes on and on... to date.. a bit more than $8,000 in permit
fees and another $12,000 in engineering fees to produce drawings with
engineers registered stamp for the various elements of the project.

All for a place to build Mercedes and restore them... and other
