Some of the jargon used on this board is just impenetrable, at least for me. What does it mean? In English? I hesitate to say WTF? :-( 1. Whatinthehell is ALDA? Seems like maybe it's a control or adjustment on a Mercedes diesel injector pump. I saw what was said to be one for sale on eBay and that was no help. You all say the ALDA this or the ALDA that. What is it, and what does it do? 2. Whatinthehell is IIRC? Seems like it's a shorthand way of saying some phrase, but every phrase I think of seems not quite right. Have a nice day. Pressure sensor on the injection pump to automatically compensate for atmospheric pressure on NA diesels and to add fuel with added boost on turbos. IIRC is if I remember correctly the first one is just what it looks like. Not that this is the forum for to share this, but I will anyway: A thought occurred to me the other day as my wife and I were in the drug store: I heard two loud talking younger people with piercings and appropriate accompanying dress discussing something. The boy was talking about some encounter he had with someone, and he was not pleased with the other guy. So he said something derogatory about him, then he said It's like GTFO! It occurred to me that we may be moving into a new, uncharted era of cursing - one that uses abreviations. Yes, these are used on the net, and more recently and more prolifically in the juvenile mainstay that is texting, but I think they will be increasingly used verbally. It will be interesting to see how society deals with this. I mean, somewhere way back when, it was determined that certain words should not be used in polite company. But today, there is a much lower standard of decency (and politeness), and I don't see how these new abbreviated curse-expressions will be kept in check. Food for the thoughtful. Tis interesting. I have heard that another common expletive is originally related to criminal charges For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. If that is true, then one day some of these newer acronyms may well become words. I don't really think that GTFO is pronouncable. I also guess a lot of this has to do with text messaging. The younger folk seem to have learned to abbreviate much of the text that passes back and forth on the cell phones.
