Searching on Amazon, both with their search engine and with DuckDuckGo,
was an exercise in frustration. All they wanted to present were steel
nuts with nylon locking inserts.

Ace Hardware or a dealer. Get a handful, they use them all over the place, 
mostly under the car and in the wheel wells on later models.

Those are called knockoffs. These days center-lock wheels (that's what they 
are called) are held on by a large nut. The ears were removed thirty years ago 
or so for pedestrian safety. That's why hood stars are spring loaded.
