Yup, "Saving Private Ryan" was the first in a new era of realism in film. Much
of the camera work is hand held, the time compression was a very new concept,
the colors are muted, sound is louder or softer than you'd expect based on the
situation.
I had to write a paper on it in college (film school remember) after I'd make a
trailer for "Shaving Ryan's Privates"

I would agree.

From a purely historical standpoint, and as far as getting a really good
overview of the scale of the operation, “The Longest Day” does a good job I
think.

“Saving Private Ryan” is good, to, but the realism is sort of jarring.  That’s
not a bad thing, just an observation.

As someone mentioned previously, if you ever watched “The Longest Day”, which
is probably one of the best ever movies made about D-Day, you would have seen
numerous references to gliders.

If you haven’t see the movie I highly advise doing so.  It’s well done and
pretty historically accurate.

I saw some of “Patton” the other day.  I love that guy.

The most widely-used US glider in WWII was the Waco CG-4 with 15 seats. The
larger CG-10 could carry almost 11K lb of cargo (like two howitzers). These
were basically one-time-use throw-away aircraft, a far cry from today's sail
planes. I am surprised that any American did not know about this effort but
I guess much has changed since I went to school. But maybe that explains
much.

2015-08-31 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
There was a show on PBS last night about the Battle of the Bulge, was
pretty good. Showed some old movies of gliders landing and crashing in
France, trying to drop in more men and supplies. Those things were
pretty much matchsticks with some fabric around them. Saw one that
landed OK then hit something, a hedgerow or ditch and pitched over,
smashing in the cockpit it looked like. No protection for the guys in
the front seats fer sure.

Another showed the Germans dropping large fuel tanks (looked like
torpedoes or aircraft drop tanks) with parachutes on them to resupply
the tanks that were out of fuel. A lot of them landed in the American
areas, some hung on trees, did not work very well.

They showed quite a few memorials in the area, some very large, to the
(mostly) American soldiers who fought and died, or were captured and
murdered by the SS. That aspect was very humbling as were the
interviews with survivors of the campaign. They were some tough old
guys, though I guess they didn't have much choice in the matter but to
press on.

the crash landing, and it was over 40 years later before he would get in
another aircraft.

Nice article. I would have sent it to him if he was still alive.

My Dad was in a glider training program for WWII, luckily the program was
suspended before my Dad was shipped over. His training took place in Texas I
think. Program was stopped because of high casualty rates during the landing
process.

Good one. I'd read about the development of this procedure before, but
hadn't seen a movie of it in action.

It makes me think that is we did this today, a glider club could launch
sailplanes twice as fast as they do with the tow plane landing after each
tow - they could just circle around, constantly pulling gliders into the
air - too cool. My 182 used to have a glider tow hook, might have to find
another one . . .
