Install is quite small, 16GB handles it easily.I like Kingston for bootable 
USB, I've had trouble getting off brands to boot.

Ballpark I would say 16GB should be more than adequate. Besides making a 
recovery drive, I would also make a system image backup as well, but keep it 
current. That way if the machine cacks you get pretty much everything back, 
including your personal stuff. A recovery drive only restores the system, not 
the user data.
