There is some dispute as to what was wrong with the TD. Suffice it to say, coolant was coming out of the engine where it was not supposed to...bad gasket, cracked head...swapped it for the 240D, which at least works.
 
Kaleb knows the guy I swapped it with and supposedly thinks that it was a $10 fix, but I don't believe it...especially since he won't say what they think the problem is/was.

the gasket fairy must have gotten to it. She doesn't come to Missouri.
 
 I was adding over a cup a week AND I could see it coming out...and even when 
the engine is not running, you can see the white marks left behind by the dried 
coolant (G-05).

  There is some dispute as to what was wrong with the TD. Suffice it to  say, 
coolant was coming out of the engine where it was not supposed  to...bad 
gasket, cracked head...swapped it for the 240D, which at least  works.
  
  Kaleb knows the guy I swapped it with and supposedly thinks that it was  a 
$10 fix, but I don't believe it...especially since he won't say what  they 
think the problem is/was.

I haven't used my W116 300SD for a while. =20

Possible, on the VW website I frequent there are rumors of the diesel engine 
for the Rabbit. Most likeley it will be the same tdi they use in the Jetta and 
Beetle

Any chances of a diesel engine appearing in the thing in the US late 
next year?
I wish I still had the old Rabbit diesel I had 15+ years ago, that was 
one great little car ( the 60 mpg wasn't hard to live with either :-)

What happened to the old 1974 240D and the 1987 300TD?  How cool to have a 
300Dt with such low mileage on it.

Yup.  Also, the VW Rabbit Pickup was the VW Caddy elsewhere, and the VW
Dasher was the Audi Fox. The VW Fox was something else, too, but I don't
remember what.
