Oops. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZLXMKMgnS8 The pilot of the tail wheeled-equipped airplane reported that, he was on an approach to land at an uncontrolled airport behind two helicopters. An airport surveillance video showed the accident airplane flying over the runway about 20 seconds after a helicopter was in a slow hover taxi adjacent to the runway. The pilot reported that he saw the helicopter and decided to land long to maintain separation. He added that while on short final, he saw a helicopter 'cross' the runway, so he increased engine power to full and attempted a go-around. About one-third of the way down the length of the runway, the airplane encountered the helicopter's downwash, and the airplane entered an uncommanded steep right bank. The pilot applied opposite aileron, but he was not able to maintain control of the airplane. Subsequently, the airplane impacted right of the runway and sustained substantial damage to the right wing and fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. According to Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular No. 90-23G, Aircraft Wake Turbulence, 'pilots should avoid taxiing or flying within a distance of three rotor diameters of a helicopter hovering or in a slow hover taxi, as the downwash can contain high wind speeds. Probable Cause: The pilot's loss of airplane control during a go-around as it encountered wake turbulence from a slow hover taxiing helicopter. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT - Fun with ADS-B
It is really cool to see a Boeing or Airbus pass under you both out the window and on ADS-B while flying through the departure path of an airport (TUL in my case). Yes, I was under air traffic control - they told the airliner to stay under 5000 ft till they were past me. They can automate avoidance maneuvers with that data in the drone - I don't trust human drone "pilots" to not hit me while I'm in the landing pattern. I want it in all drones. True. But it’s also fun to see what’s passing overhead. A lot of military flight ops here due to the relatively quiet airport and altitude. They clearly come to train on a regular basis. The youngest’s work is right under the final approach for 21, less than a mile out from the threshold, so he likes to be able to watch the activity in the pattern and see it when it passes over. -D > On Jun 26, 2022, at 11:24 AM, OK Don via Mercedes > wrote: > > It's even more fun to be that traffic! > >> On Sat, Jun 25, 2022 at 7:40 PM dan penoff.com via Mercedes < >> mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: >> >> Youngest son likes to track flights, so I got him an ADS-B RaspberryPi >> receiver from FlightAware. [MBZ] OT - Fun with ADS-B
Youngest son likes to track flights, so I got him an ADS-B RaspberryPi receiver from FlightAware. It came with a little base-loaded magnetic antenna that he had stuck up in one of the skylights in his room, which limited the reception somewhat. Just put up a full blown ADS-B “stick” on the roof today and hooked it up. Not a major difference in reception, but a lot better range, for sure. We’re picking up flights from as far away as 100 miles and a lot more traffic to the east and south, where there’s little in the way of topography to block our reception. Fun to see all the traffic going over the house. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
