Re: [MBZ] OT - GPS voice - turn and lane directions

2008-09-09 Thread Bill R
Come to think of it, one of the features I like a lot on mine is that it
let's youi know which lane to be in by voice direction and an arrow that
tells you which direction the next turn will be. "Turn left, then get in
the right lane" sort of thing. Useful feature that.

Does yours have a choice of voices you can use? I have not tried the others
on mine as the standard works ok. Mine will usually give me about 1/4 - 1/2
mile to make the u-turn or turn around, then recalculate. It does seem to
chose some odd local routes, but for the most part my IPAQ/TomTom works
pretty well.

Re: [MBZ] OT - GPS voice

2008-09-08 Thread Wilton Strickland
I agree that back here in the Colonies road layout has been somewhat
haphazard and based largely on game trails, Indian trails, streams, valleys,
ridge lines, etc. - not much other rhyme or reason. Where was it easiest to
pull a cart/wagon, get to a stream, cross a stream, etc? By the time the
surveyors got into the plains, they decided to try to organize and keep
things in order much better - 'course the topography made it easy to do,
lack of multiple ownership allowed it., and the globe's parallel/meridian
system based on true north provided a convenient pattern - voila! Section
lines. Simple, easy.

My lack thereof is why I took myself out of Pensacola flight training
(forfeiting a $1 million opportunity of training). Really pissed off some
USCG folks, which is why I retired as an O3.

Hey, I saw some friends get really dead in our aircraft when I was a Petty
Officer.

I wasn't going to kill any more of us. Pilots should have a knack for
flying, and I lacked that. Yes, I pissed off some Marine flight instructors
for landing too smoothly, but landing is 1% of flying. I chose to let those
with natural talent for this sort of thing ... well, do it. I'd have made a
great airline pilot.

I can a fly an airplane smoothly. I just don't know where I am w/out
instruments.

Re: [MBZ] OT - GPS voice

2008-09-08 Thread Wonko the Sane
That is what makes weekend motorcycle (and occasionally 240D) touring so
much fun. The challenge, especially on the motorcycle, is to stay on paved
roads. One can go for a dozen miles on a nice paved road, only to find that
there is a stop sign with three options (four, if you include retracing your
route), all of which are slippery-for-motorcycle gravel.

The other challenge (motorcycle only) is running out of fuel. It is not out
of the realm of possibility to discover yourself 50 miles from the nearest
fuel stop. Not dangerous as long as you don't tempt reserve -- and I never
do that.

Yes, I could pull out a map and plan the route -- but that would not be as
much fun.

My G 750 has a LONG list of different languages with different voice for
each. Jill is my American English speaker; 'haven't tried any of the
others. 'Just remembered I was on a dead-end road today when she was trying
to get me to do a u-turn. Often in town when I ignore her turns, she tries
to get me to go around the block back to the original route; out in the
country, she recalculates an alternate route. It seems to work very well,
but it's been mostly entertainment so far, but if I need it, I'm sure it can
get me to the destination or evan save me as it did getting me back on the
freeway today.

In contrast to Wonko's Iowa, there are MANY ways here in the original
Colonies to get from one point to another - 'don't have to go around a
section; 'can almost always find a diagonal.

BTW, on low level practice bomb runs in IA, NE, ND, SD, OK and some other
areas with roads laid out nearly exclusively N-S and E-W, I often cranked in
a bit of heading correction to our bombing/navigation systems based on the
layout of those roads/sections - sometimes as small as half a degree.

Re: [MBZ] OT - GPS voice

2008-09-08 Thread Wilton Strickland
Oh, I understand what's she's doing; she recalculates a new route
immediately, or tries to get me to turn around and get back on original when
alternate seems unreasonable to her. Most of my routes this morning were
already very falmiliar to me with shortcuts, less-traveled routes, etc.,
I've worked out over several years. 'Sorta entertaining to see what she's
gonna come up with. So far, 'haven't needed her much, but she did help
coupla times this morning. 'Liked being able to look ahead and confirm the
route, especially trying to get back on fairly new freeway.

Yep, Grissom. It was called *Bunker Hill Air Force Base *before it was
that. That's where I got to crawl around/in a B58 if I remember.

The reason why she develops a stammer and keeps saying "Recalculating"
is that she wants to get you back on the precalculated route ASAP, via
a U-turn if necessary. If you press the "menu" button and then
"detour" (at least on my Garmin 265W), she'll know you've left the old
route on purpose and will help you find a new one.

I do feel a little like one of Mary Poppins' charges when following her orders.

You can get new voices for it. I think mine is "Jane" a Brit voice. I
yell at her when she keeps recalculating and telling me to turn around,
but she does not listen to me. Imagine that. My daughter and I mock
her in those circumstances.

I can't help but think the next iteration will have voice response and
will argue with you -- perhaps with various personality modules ranging
from a British Butler to Woman At That Time.

I find the voice prompts very distracting, probably because I'm hard of
hearing. 1st thing I do on a new GPS is turn them off.

'Used my Garmin GPS coupla hours this morning. The woman's voice reminds me
of the B-58 in-flight warning system of the 60's, 'cept I keep imagining
that she sounds a bit annoyed when I don't follow her instructions - it
makes her say, "Re-calculating." 'Even wanted me to make a u-turn a coupla
