Thanks. 'Thought it was something to do with sailing. 'Heard my older
brothers (Navy) use it a lot when I was a lttle fella.
Another one I heard a lot was skivvies, (underwear?). Also deck,
head, bulkhead, chow, grabass (pronounced gra BAHSS' in their later,
more mellow years) and a bunch of other fine nautical terms I can't remember
right now.

That is an old sailing term, dating to the time of square-rigged
sailing vessels. To square away means to change the sailing
position of the vessel so the wind is from directly aft and so
the best position of the yard arms is perpendicular (or square)
to the length of the vessel. Somewhere along the way it came to
mean tidy.

Your older brothers raised you right -- but you had enough sense to select
thermals over waves.

Yep, that was a VERY deliberate decision.

I was very lucky to have 5 significantly older brothers and a sister, all of
whom would have done anything to help their baby brother. One of 'em even
sent me to college though he wasn't able to himself.

[MBZ] OT - Squared away

2009-06-03 Thread WILTON
BTW, Wonko, 2 of my brothers made Navy chief in ~Feb '45; one stayed for 20
years, the other 24.  One was a Boson and several times Chief of the Boat;
other was Hospital Corpsman (X-Ray). I was about 7 (1941) when I learned about
having things squared away.
