2009-09-02 Thread Wonko the Sane
"She" was a Change Of Command ceremony that happened to coincide with our
air show visit to Canadian Forces PEI.

One of our CGAS Cape Cod officers was stationed there as an exchange pilot
(unfortunately, the Canadian pilot they sent to CGAS Cape Cod later died in
a crash [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CG-1432_Crash -- I was the one who
found the helo wreckage, using aircraft radar in heavy snow showers, on the
first-response SAR aircraft; my job-counterpart who died, John Tait, was a
friend] ...

But enough of the morbid.

The Canadian Forces flew in a Buffalo full of lobster and another Buffalo
full of Canadian ale. A good time was had by all hands. It was quite the
beach party and the Yanks were the guests of honor, and treated accordingly.

I seem to remember two Canadian pilots leaving the party (having partied)
and doing a low fly-over (VERY low, scary-low double digits feet in
altitude!) in a Chinook as a parting salute to their CO.

That would get a USCG pilot permanently grounded. A military aircraft DUI is
frowned upon. The Canadians only laughed about it.

Re: [MBZ] OT 2000 Nissan Maxima

2009-09-02 Thread R A Bennell
Not sure what you mean??

My comment was mostly one of "we have too many vehicles" right now. I am going
broke paying the insurance etc. My
son Tom is a big strapping fellow and I personally think he is going to miss
having a truck but time will tell. The
nice thing about this Nissan is that we got into it low enough to likely get
back out without a whole lot of loss
if he decides by spring that he shouldn't have swapped to a car. The other side
of that is that my elder son Geoff
should graduate in the spring and will need wheels so if Tom wants out of the
Nissan, Geoff might take it over.
Geoff has been driving our old 4Runner and it is mechanically pretty good but
not too pretty as it has a fair
amount of rust and no AC. We will park it for the winter as he will go back to
riding the bus to and from the
university. He is living with his girlfriend in an apartment and they currently
have no parking spot. He has parked
on the street all summer but that becomes more difficult in winter. Around
here, they sometimes ban onstreet
parking when it snows so that they can get out and clean the streets without
cars in the way.

So, the current fleet is - oldest first -

1. 76 300D used by me in summer only
2. 95 4Runner - SR5 3.0 V6 5 sp manual, 4X4 - to be parked for the winter
within the next month or so
3. 98 F150 reg cab 4X4 4.2 V6 and 5 sp manual tranny - to be sold, soon I hope
4. 2000 Nissan Maxima just acquired
5. 02 F150 Supercrew Lariat 4X4 that I drive to the lake to tow boats etc and
use in the winter when the 300D is
parked in the garage
6. 07 Honda Accord - 4 cyl - Wifemobile

2009-09-01 Thread Curt Raymond
Sounds like a good deal to me. I've always liked Nissan sedans. Looks like it
should get better mileage than the F150, the average on the auto is 20mpg
(which seems low to me) while the average on the 4wd F150 4.2l is 15 (which
also seems low).

I bought one of these yesterday. Couldn't pass up what I thought was a bargain
price. It is relatively clean - a
few scratches on bumpers etc, but no rust and clean interior. Charcoal color
with grey cloth interior. No sunroof
which does not really bother me. Has 122K miles on it - much of that highway
cruising from Canada to AZ as the
owners have spent the past several winters in Mesa. In US dollars (converted
from CDN) I paid about $2,700. I think
I did OK - but younger son has claimed it as his own and proudly drove it to
work this morning. I guess the 98 F150
he was driving will have a For Sale sign on it.
