Re: [MBZ] OT Conv top electric motor question

So, what is up with this thing and can it be made to work right?

If there's nothing visibly wrong and the brushes are OK, then it's
likely you have a shorted winding, which saps the torque considerably.
Unless you can/will rewind the motor, either the armature (spinning)
or the field (stationary), whatever's necessary, it's shot. There
are motor rewinding shops, but likely it'd cost you more than your
replacement would. DIY might work, but it's not an easy task for
the novice. I've never done it.

I am thinking about getting window lift motor of some sort and bodging
up some kind of adapter -- those things have hellacious torque.

They're just motors, usually with reduction gearboxes. If you can
find something that will work and the motor's strong enough then
go for it.

[MBZ] OT Conv top electric motor question

2006-09-02 Thread Rich Thomas
The electric convertible top motor on my 76 Eldo quit working. A
replacement is like $250 -- crazy. I got it spinning, but it has no
torque and won't even turn the reduction gearbox that turns some
flexible shafts that go to the top lift mechanisms on either side, and I
can hold the shaft with pliers and it does not have much torque. So I
don't know much about electric motors, but this thing looks pretty
simple. It has a coil sitting below a small plate that fits around the
armature about 30deg maybe. (I don't know what that part is called).
12V passes through this coil one way or the other to make it spin the
right way for up/down. 12V is switched by a relay to the armature
brushes. I cleaned everything and it spins fine when I put 12V to the
motor power wire and the coil wire, just no torque. The reduction gear
box spins OK -- I cleaned and regreased it all. The whole armature is
about 4 inches long, an inch or a bit more diameter. The relay works OK.
