2013-11-01 Thread Dan Penoff
Guy I worked with back in the early 80s grew up in South Bend, and as a young
man worked for Studebaker. Unfortunately (for him) he got his job about a year
before they went under.

He described the conditions in the plant as people started to figure out the
place was going down the tubes as "comical". He said they often left their
lunch leftovers in door panels, and on one of the last days, one of his
co-workers relieved his bowels into the door panel of a car.

Guess the dealer that got that car was happy

BIL was a Studebaker fan. Had a '46 Studebaker pickup that got 26 mpg with
big tires on the back.
Then he bought a sedan with a little propeller on its pointy grill.
Finally a little four door V-8 hotrod. Dealership closed and he was never
happy with his Fords or Chevys until the GM Saturn. He was still bragging
about his Saturn the year he died.
Gerry

Studebakers weren't so bad. The little Superhawk was a nice car. I knew a
fellow who drove one for a very long time. Black with a white stripe on
the side. V8 and a manual transmission with overdrive.
Quite the little hotrod for its time in the early 60's.
And how about the Avanti?

I had an uncle who drove a really ugly one. 4 door sedan that was somewhat
rounded and sort of a pinky tan colour. But he put a lot of miles on the
silly looking thing.

True, the Studebakers were good cars. Dad bought a pickup truck when the
local dealer went out of business, we drove it to about 200k miles, then
sold it to a collector. I don't remember why they died (the brand).

And it did not help that they were junk. My recollection is that the
engines wore out very quickly.
I also think I recall that it was a big car introduced at a time when
the public was buying smaller cars.

I see one around here that is unique and I assume somone has grafted the
front clip onto another vehicle as I don't believe they ever made an
Edsel version of the Ranchero.
