You might want to do some research on the idea of adding sand. My neigbbour who was an agricultural technician until retirement recently, says that the only thing you use sand for is to make mortar. A lot of clay. Indiana is all clay until you get into the flatlands in the north where the glaciers were. I assume Illinois is the same... where I lived Southwest of Chicago, the soil was black.
