[MBZ] Oil change, etc...
Changed the oil in my '84 190D, pulled a sample too, soon enough we should know something about the ZDDP levels in M1 5w40. Unfortunately I let time get away from me and this sample has 9700 miles on it... Anyway the big news is that I decided to change the fluid and filter in the power steering pump. Just as I was about to suck the fluid out I remembered the debate on here about using ATF in newer PS pumps. I figured I'd look and see what was in there first and if it was ATF replace with the same, if not wait and get some proper stuff from Rusty. I dipped a clean paper towel into the fluid, it came out red and smelled like ATF so I replaced with same. The filter is the big story though, it was filthy, big specks of crud all through it, glad I had a replacement. Hope it wasn't the crud that was holding it all together... I also suctioned out some ATF and replaced maybe 1/2 qt with Mobil 1. We're still short of the required change interval but I'd noticed the shifts were getting kind of stiff. Those seem to have cleaned up but its quite possible the trans was a little low before. I should have checked first... -Curt -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Oil change, etc...
I thought that ATF was fine in power steering pumps up through '87 according to Marshall. I like to drain the steering box by removing the bolt plugging the hole for the locking tool, but it takes a long time to work out all the air when I do that.
