The author is right, except it should also have a rack in the back of
the cab with at least one lever action and an 03a3 hanging.
Transmission should be a truck ( floor shift) 4 or 5 speed.

Offroad I like an auto, hunting season we do a bunch of creeping around in the
woods, a manual isn't bad if you've got the gearing right and have a gear that
idles at about 2mph but an auto sure is handy.
My '88 S15 with the anemic 2.8l v6 had a 5spd but that was the last manual
truck I had. My Dakota lasted 222,000 miles with its original transmission
which was badly abused. I once towed my 1928 Farmall Regular about 300 miles
with it. On a 1000# trailer I was right at the limit for what my truck could
handle...

I am on my 2nd Ford F150 Supercrew. A great truck for my needs. It hauls
people and goods and tows too. Box could be bigger but then it would be
harder to park etc. Works well for us as we do long highway trips to the
lake from the city. We take all sorts of stuff along and bring much of
it back (tools etc). It rides nice, is quiet, gets reasonable mileage
etc. Essentially a big 4 door sedan with a huge trunk.

Re: [MBZ] Pickup trucks. was: cars

2018-06-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Its from somebody who hasn't driven a modern pickup.
Angie and I were at a local used car lot the other day that specializes in old
trucks. He had a pre-'73 Chevy a pre-'87 Chevy, a pair of '60s Fords and a
square body Dodge. All fun trucks to look at but as I told Angie I wouldn't
want to drive one from here to camp.
My '10 Dodge RAM 1500 will out work those trucks, it'll tow more weight, I can
put more in the bed and it'll do it faster with more control while using less
fuel and requiring FAR less maintenance. I can fit 6 people in my truck with
seat belts and still have storage for tow straps and such under the rear seat.
I've got satellite radio which is great for long trips and when I arrive I feel
fine unlike the bone shaking you'd take from a leaf spring truck of yesteryear.
Then theres the traction control which makes it better offroad and before you
say anything my truck has spent a BUNCH of time offroad, we've taken it through
some wicked mud holes. Its hauled more cord wood than I can remember, brought
home my loader, too Dimitri's 240D to Maine, hauled my Jetta and Angie's Golf
home, hauled snowmobiles around, jump started the snowmobile club's tractor and
more besides. Its worked hard and never given me any trouble to speak of. Right
around 125,000 miles on it now and its just getting broken in.

Are the old trucks cool? You betcha and I'd like to have one to play with but
for a WORK truck, especially if you have a crew working a modern truck has it
all over those old beasts...
