Re: [MBZ] Power antenna relay on 1985 300CD?

2009-08-16 Thread Jim Cathey

Why/when would you want it at half-mast?

On an SL, in particular, they whistle noticeably in the wind.
Raising them only the necessary amount for good reception
is nice for those. Also, not raising them the full amount
extends their life to some extent, and reduces the vulnerability
to damage. I suppose there are also multipath scenarios in
cities, but I've never run into those.

The power wire for the antenna was not plugged into the correct jack
on the

radio. The antenna plug has 4 pins but doesn't function as it should.

The three-wire antenna has a four-wire-plug adapter cable,
so it can plug in place of the correct (NLA) antenna.

But it ain't right (IMHO).

We are in an areas with multiple TV and radio broadcasting stations so need
to lower the antenna occasionally to combat signal bleeding.

The bayonet fitting was OK but the power plug was misconnected. Antenna now
fully extends but doesn't operate at half-mast, even after I swapped the
antenna switch. The old antenna did operate at half mast, Ideas?

It just occurred me that perhaps the power cord to the antenna had slipped
out of the back of the radio (bayonet connection). Wouldn't that be a

There is no relay. There is the antenna. Many parts suppliers
call anything of moderate size in a box a 'relay'. It's easy
to check the connector pins at the relay for power, etc. At
that vintage, the innards are purely electromechanical, so
open 'er up and have a look if the connector checks out.

[MBZ] Power antenna relay on 1985 300CD?

2009-08-14 Thread andrew strasfogel
I am getting no power to the power antenna on the 1985 300CD. The radio
works and I swapped out the antenna switches - no effect. All other
electrical functions are good, so it isn't a fuse. The schematic shows an
"antenna motor/relay" downstream of the fuse box but I can't find this part
on ebay or in any of the online catalogs, let alone deduce where to find it
in the car! Has anyone ever replaced one of these to solve similar symptoms
(dead antenna)?
Thanks again,

Andrew
