I'd love to see that in a car engine. 70 mpg at 70 mph!
Now I've got to research the specific consumption of a 15hp
Kubota garden tractor engine. Are those things direct injection
or indirect?

Mitch.

I did some digging to try to figure out what the actual fuel
consumption is. The best I've found is a "standard rule of thumb
in Yacht Design and Naval Architecture for a Diesel engine
running at an efficient speed places fuel usage at 16 hp per
gallon per hour"

With a 4) 1500 hp power units, there is 6000 hp available. It
will not use all of it when cruising! But a minimum fuel usage
at maximum power would be 375 g/h. If it is traveling at 30 mph
just then, it would be 12.5 g/m or 0.08 mpg.

Unrelated, while digging I found a Sprinter diesel-electric

Re: [MBZ] RR MPG - was First MB DIesel

2008-01-25 Thread Rich Thomas
So one day I was fishing with a buddy about 6 or 7 miles offshore out of
Salem MA, on Stellwagen bank. It was a calm day, very flat seas, a bit
hazy, viz maybe a mile or so. We hear this gawdawful sound, like
fighter locomotives taking off, and start thinking some heavy is coming
into Boston maybe a tad low, but it was coming from the east. And holy
sh*t!!! a few seconds later the turbo-yacht Octopussy, which is maybe
150ft? screams by, maybe 1/4 mile off, at full bore doing what we
guessed about 70mph and throwing a roostertail about 300ft. That was
damned impressive. I am guessing their fuel consumption was a tad over
12.5 gpm.

We thought they were damned lucky too because there were humpbacks all
around, and they are not quite that big, but would put a serious hurt on
that hull at that speed.

Google research shows 45m, top speed 53kt, turbine/waterjet drive.
There are some guys, likely with small, ahem, endowments, who have built
faster yachts but that was the first big go-fast boat like that..

Direct AFAIK. There was some talk on Saabnet awhile ago about putting one in a
96.
I declared it didn't make any sense and some others backed me up.

I got to run a Deere diesel lawn tractor last fall. It was a bit weird to have
to wait for glowplugs on a lawn tractor...
