I never noticed much difference in my 1999. (320 4matic wagon)
I think it's supposed to short shift and limit available power at part 
throttle.
When I'd do my slide recovery practice in a snowy parking lot, I could 
put it sideways with a jab of throttle in either transmission mode.


I think what happened in my case was my conservative driving style 
taught the TCM (via adaptive learning) to behave in S like MBZ 
programmed it to behave in W.
