I have put the Unwired Tools in a 1980 300D works good though doesn't have
all the same functionality as the OE.

2010-11-19 Thread Rusty Cullens
From a parts guy stand point the Unwired Tools version is the ONLY way to
go. The original Mercedes units sell for $1620.00 versus $795.00 for Unwired
Tools. The rebuilt aluminum housing version sold by many aftermarket
suppliers also sell in the $795.00 range and have a warranty return rate of
over 50%. I have sold over 50 Unwired Tools units with ZERO complaints, only
kudos for a wonderful replacement idea that actually works as intended. Yes,
the original units work but not for any considerable length of time. When I
got into this business in 1976, the company I worked for (German Auto Parts)
sold well over 300 servo's per month. It was a poorly designed Chrysler
system that was unsuitable from the beginning. The models that had them and
still do, bring substantially less money on resale than like type models
with the old manual systems or updated climate control systems. So from 1976
thru 1981 the climate systems were just substandard. Of course this is just
my $.02 worth.

Guys,
I
wasn't "aiming" at anyone. I was just stating my opinion and experience
as others have. I belong to multiple lists and over the years have
endured many members disparage the 116 while extolling the virtues of
the 126 line. Personally, I don't like all of the 126 plastic and the
seats that seem to rip at the seams way too soon. But again, to each his
own. I was just defending my car, not picking on anyone else.

Re: [MBZ] Unwired Tools W116 ACC fix

2010-11-16 Thread Curt Raymond
Spoken as somebody who doesn't work for a manufacturer...

The market for these things can't be all that big. So somebody has to go out
and figure out how to make it, they have to figure out how to replace the
actuators etc, they have to test it and make sure it works, they have to write
installation instructions, and make sure they're correct and easy to follow.
Then they have to actually make the things and tie up a bunch of money in
having them available so you don't have to wait for one when you order. They
have to support it and have people who actually know what they're talking about
on the other end of the phone. They have to have a phone system that can
support that...

So is there probably $50 in parts, maybe I'd guess its closer to $100 but I
won't quibble, does it actually cost $50 to design and make one? Probably not...

I see this all the time "Software should be cheap, the CD doesn't cost hardly
anything" yeah but you gotta pay the developers...

I
don't normally reply to these discussions, but since I own a 1980
300SD, W116, and have for about 14 yrs, I will comment. Yes I would like
an Unwired kit if the price wasn't a pure rape of the consumer. There's
about $50.00 or less of parts there and they want $795. Give me a break
please. I've replaced my servo unit several times over the 14 years. I
can now do it in about 25 minutes. I have the warranty via George Murphy
so it only costs me about $95. to replace the unit. Is it a
collectible? I think so or I wouldn't continue to repair and drive it.
It is a great road car, easy to work on, and uses older, normally less
expensive parts.
I think we all like the cars we like and we all
justify what we pay for parts. I also think that if anyone wants to
"condemn" a model, then do it for personal, justifiable reasons and not
because of one part on the car. And yes, I wish I could take the AC
system off my 83 300D and install it on the 80 300SD as it has had far
fewer repairs (monovalves) over the 14 years that I've own it.
I'm

Re: [MBZ] Unwired Tools W116 ACC fix (was: droolworthy 6.9)

2010-11-16 Thread Greg Fiorentino
FWIW I actually rebuilt the servo on the '79 300TD, using parts from the
original and a leaking one I bought for $40 on eBay. OTOH I put many hours
into this tedious job, requiring a lathe and a toolpost grinder to drill out
the stainless steel screws holding on the bottom part. Hopefully it will
last a few years.

Guys,
I wasn't "aiming" at anyone. I was just stating my opinion and experience as
others have. I belong to multiple lists and over the years have endured many
members disparage the 116 while extolling the virtues of the 126 line.
Personally, I don't like all of the 126 plastic and the seats that seem to rip
at the seams way too soon. But again, to each his own. I was just defending my
car, not picking on anyone else.

2010-11-16 Thread Dieselhead
I think that was aimed at me, and I didn't mean to disparage anyone
who has a crypler ACC car and likes it. The 300SD 116, and all 116
are nice cars. I personally choose not to buy anything with the
crypler ACC in it.

I skipped 15 years from 1966 to the next MB, a 1981 240D with manual
hearing controls. From there I migrated to ACC 2 cars, and for
longtime listmembers, you know I don't like that either, but tolerate
it. I also like manual sunroofs and control of air conditioning
separate from control of heating. I don't like computers in cars and
I despise cars that talk back. So I am a throwback or whatever.
These are my opinions, nothing more.

I do like MB central locking, it is very convenient and silent. I
don't care much one way or the other about electric windows, except
in the 123 and newer cars it is nice because with no wings the best
ventilation is to put the RR window down and it is hard to reach a
crank from the drivers seat. THat is something I could do in 110/111
cars with manual windows.

The Unwired Tool set up RETAILS for $795.00 Roger. I sell it for
$575.00. I wasn't condemning your cars, I have owned many cars with
the servo in them and enjoyed them tremendously. I have a 1981 380SL
that I am not planning on ever selling and it has a servo in it. I
see that you are in GA, next time you need parts, please give me a
call as you can get overnight service from us.

I don't normally reply to these discussions, but since I own a 1980
300SD, W116, and have for about 14 yrs, I will comment. Yes I would
like an Unwired kit if the price wasn't a pure rape of the
consumer. There's about $50.00 or less of parts there and they want
$795. Give me a break please. I've replaced my servo unit several
times over the 14 years. I can now do it in about 25 minutes. I
have the warranty via George Murphy so it only costs me about $95.
to replace the unit. Is it a collectible? I think so or I wouldn't
continue to repair and drive it. It is a great road car, easy to
work on, and uses older, normally less expensive parts.
I think we all like the cars we like and we all justify what we pay
for parts. I also think that if anyone wants to "condemn" a model,
then do it for personal, justifiable reasons and not because of one
part on the car. And yes, I wish I could take the AC system off my
83 300D and install it on the 80 300SD as it has had far fewer
repairs (monovalves) over the 14 years that I've own it.

2010-11-15 Thread OK Don
I had to replace the servo in the SLC after a year or two of ownership. The
replacement (plastic model) lasted eight more years. I think the trick is to
flush the coolant system and replace the antifreeze per the MB schedule, and
to use the AC weekly during the winter - to keep the servo moving over it's
complete range. YMMV.

I often wondered about this servo replacement kit. In fact, I thought
about making one myself for a while... it would certainly be an
interesting project. But then, I think about 107s and 116s... these
are now classic cars just starting to gain appreciation as a real
"old" car. Suddenly, 116s are even harder to find in nice shape.I
predict their value will start increasing soon, just as W108s and
W111s have. When they do, original cars will win. And cars with a
working servo will even be better.

I dislike buying cars with aftermaket radios installed. If I found a
car with aftermarket climate control... I'd run!

So, my advice: Save you your pennies for a servo if the car has any
chance of surviving for another 5-10 years. The cars made it over 30
years with one... do the job right and make it last another 30.
Despite what you read on the forums, when the systems are setup
properly, they do work.

Or if you do go for the Unwired system, save all the old parts... I
predict they'll be worth something to guys converting the cars back in
a few years!

Subject: [MBZ] Unwired Tools ACC II Servo $695

I don't know if you all are aware that Unwired Tools has a
replacement for the tired, worn, shot ACC II servo in many 116s,
123,107 and possibly others.
IIRC Rusty Cullens and Gary Hurst of Buymbparts.com are
presently
selling them for $695. If anyone is interested I can check to see if
Buymbparts.com is still selling them for $695.
