My kid brother had a diesel tempo, it had the mazda engine.  the diesel
rangers used mazda and mitsubishi diesels.

They were the same engine.

These engines will probably run 400-500k miles  Mine was factory new after 
110k.  The car rotted out from under it.  Of course Joe the owner has to 
change the oil to get to 400k.

There was a diesel Escort too. IIRC the battery was in the trunk.
  I *think* it was an Isuzu engine, could have been a Mitsu though.

I have way more time than money, and I could easily evaluate
the other rockers once off.  But how _do_ they come off?

diesels for the escort and tempo availalble on there.

yep, they had diesel ford escorts as well.  I even saw one, a station 
wagon version, not too long ago filling up next to me.
