[MBZ] W110 questions

2007-02-19 Thread eric peterson
Going to look at a 200D fintail this week. Any
particular areas to pay special attention to?? Car
has some rust but I am not sure just how much. Is this
a model that once the rust starts it is pretty much
terminal in the sense that you can't really get rid of
it? Also wondering what to expect performance wise??
Can I expect it to be on par with a 240D or is that
overly optimistic??

Thanks in advance

Rust along the front inner fenders can be VERY expensive to repair (I've
done two of them). Rust around the jack sockets can be an expensive
mess too.

Good luck.

haven't seen it yet but description was a spot or two
of rust on the hood, one under the front turn signal
and a spot on the door sill. so hopefully its not a
lost cause.

!!
The 200D is a 110.110. They are great fun. The rust question depends on
your tolerance. If you want a perfect car or a show car, the rust will be
quite expensive. If you want a car to drive, rust and all, the 110 can
look pretty bad and still be roadworthy. I drove a 65 190Dc for several
winters that was very rusty. It was great and dependable
transportation. Even in its rusty state, it wiped out a ford product that
pulled out in front of it, and still drove away. It lost a chrome strip
under the doors and the corner of the bumper punched through the RF
tire. I put on the spare and pulled out the bumper and drove on.

Rust in the rockers is bad. Plan on carrying a scissors jack, and not
using the stock jack it the jack points are rusty. Also watch for rust
around the front shock towers. My rustbucket 190Dc had one shock tower
about to bust loose. Some sheet metal from an old appliance and a bunch of
sheet metal screws repaired it, but was an ugly repair. As Herr Doktor
Booth said, inner fenders and rockers. If the rockers are not too bad, but
there are holes rusted behind the front tire or in front of the rear tire,
those can be patched pretty easily, and that will add years to the life of
the rockers. You might also consider cleaning up the inside of the rockers
and spraying in POR15. If the rockers rust too bad, the body sags and the
doors stick, or become inoperable. If anyone tries to fix rockers, they
can sag the body and give you back a mess, unless it is a really good body man.

Have fun. Send pics is you buy it

Performance? Dunno about autos. 4 speed is no racer, but decent. Top
speed is about 70 They are not SDLs on the interstate. Overall, probably
similar to the 240D. The body is lighter than a 123, but power is less, 60
Hp. Put an OM 616 in it (not easy) and it is a relative screamer. AN
OM 615 is a reasonable conversion, probably.
