[MBZ] W116 brake warning light blinking

2019-01-09 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Vehicle is my '79 300SD.

Recently, when starting the car, the dashboard brake warning light will
blink on and off for about 10 seconds. What does this mean? Pads are not
worn, fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir is normal.

Which lamp? Aren't there two? One, labeled "BRAKE" is hooked to the
parking brake pedal, and the fluid level sensors. The other is hooked to
the brake pads. I'm guessing it's a parking brake pedal switch issue, if
it's "BRAKE". If it's the other, sometimes the sensor wires can get in the
way of the sharp edge of a worn brake rotor (disc), and register false
positives.

Which light? The red parking brake warning, or the orange pad wear warning?

It's the red one, with the symbol that looks sort of like (O)

That's for the front brake pads. It works by grounding when the pads get worn.
Either your pads are worn or one of the sensor wires is shorting out against
something on occasion.

I vote for the sensor wires. This has happened to me as well.

Does the owner's manual say anything about the light? I've got bad insulation
on the wear sensor wires for the front pads on my 87 300TD, but the light
blinks intermittently during each drive, for the duration of the drive.

I've had insulation on the cable _to_ the sensor sockets start to fall apart,
at the wheel end. You just
have to get in there and take a good look at everything. I think you can
unplug them in the engine
compartment, see if that makes a positive difference.

I've had the fluid level sensors go wacky.   I unplugged em and the
"problem" went away.

Sadly I don't have an owner's manual for this car. I'll check the pad
sensors/wiring for any obvious damage. The blinking on mine is only at
startup (but not every time), and stops after about 10 seconds.
