Re: [MBZ] Was: "The Star" back issue Now: '68 250S

2013-01-03 Thread Peter Frederick
Both front fenders perforated, rear quarters iffy, floor is bad in the
rear, sills getting rough.

It's bad enough I'd not bother to attempt a restoration, but the
running gear is all good except the engine block is cracked. PO left
water in it over the winter. I acquired a spare engine in running
condition from a 74 SL, needs cams, distributor, and exhaust manifolds
changed but otherwise ready to do.

Transmission is fine, rear end has a bit of a whine, probably needs
fluid changed.

Unknown milage because the odometer had not moved for years before I
got it.

Wrong calipers on the front, need the heavy duty ones.

I have a replacement Becker Mexico with tape player in unknown
condition, too.

Currently has home-made vinyl seat covers in front that I put
together, I have a mostly completed set in navy blue leather.

Does your 4.5 still have the rear axle installed? Where are you located?

Milage wasn't any better on the injected models, in fact with a heavy
foot it's usually worse.

Best I ever got on the 280 SE 4.5 was 17 on the highway, typically in
town it was 14 at best, as low as 11.

I'm waiting for Kaleb's token lowball offer here

Nice car. I had a 1970 280S that was a real beauty. 40k on it, one owner,
still had the protective plastic on the sun visors and passenger side map
pocket. No AC, which was a killer down here, as these things are like
greenhouses with all the glass.

It had dual Zeniths which ran quite well. Mileage still sucked, but it always
did on the carbureted models.

[MBZ] Was: "The Star" back issue Now: '68 250S

2013-01-03 Thread Jon Agne
I am just looking to get as much information as possible about the Zenith 35/40
carbs. In a moment of what can be best described as 'insanity', I purchased a
medium red '68 250S. Good solid car, but it wasn't running right. Replaced
accelerator pumps, checked and adjusted chokes, but we could not get it to
idle. Even tried the lacquer thinner, but it would only idle with full choke.
So off to the carb shop they went, and I put the car into storage until the
spring thaw.

At that time, I will be completely doing the fuel tank and lines, the brake
system, power steering system, and I might even try and re-install the AC.

Jon

PS: In the meantime, I came across a '69 280SE locally with a seized engine
which I have for a parts car. I am lucky that my wife is a very patient woman!
