Big Clive did a video on them recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unxEdyW8RP8He liked them with caveats. I've got a set, it seems like they're all pretty much the same as the one linked. I think I've only used it once so far but it worked well. I used a heat gun but I think a hair dryer would work. I *suspect* the metal is some alloy of bismuth which should melt at less than 100C. Solder is not especially strong and it has long been understood that it is poor practice to depend on solder for mechanical strength in a joint. Ah - but it has adhesive! The adhesive is on the tube. Polyolefin tube will stretch when cold. Then shrink when hot. Thus "heatstrink tubing" And soldering is less durable in a high stress and vibration environment than a crimp. It should be fairly waterproof though. I would be inclined to use gooey on the inside heatshrink tubing over ordinary crimp butt splices. May be OK but I am dubious about any solder that melts at such a low temp. Ancor makes crimp connectors with adhesive-lined heat-shrink sleeves for marine applications. Looks like they are worth trying. Do they work with just a hair dryer? I think you'll need a heat gun.
