BMWs too IIRC, and Audis. I know I originally bought that Autozone set a
few years back specifically to put Red Line in my 4000 Quattro's center
diff/tranny (they share fluid), and I think I had to use the 17mm.

And if you ever end up with a VW, you'll need the 17mm. They use it for

It should require a 10mm Allen wrench.

I find it easiest to cut off a piece about 3/4" and use a good
strong 10mm box wrench to break the bolts loose. A 10mm gear wrench
is handy to unscrew them the rest of the way. Beats 3' of extensions

Sounds like monkeys have been in there. Ugh! Note: a 3/8" will be too
small and will round out the bolts. Whenever I come across a rounded
out starter bolt I hammer in a 12mm triple-square head and have had
good luck getting them to crack loose. Should this be the case, replace
the bolts.

It is possible someone replaced the hardware with non-original bolts,
so then all bets are off, just find what fits. Factory is 10mm.

Use a very long extension with a universal plus the 10mm hex socket to

This is nuts. All I need is one hex key to change out my starter (83
240D)
and all sets that I can find in stores only go up to 10mm.

We don't have Harbor Freight around here, but we have Northern Tool. No
luck.

Same deal at Sears.

And they all come in sets, not individual.

Do I have to chase down a tool truck and pull it over?

Is it a 13 mm?

I replaced the starter on my '81 300D about 2 years ago, and it wasn't
too hard. You will need a 1/2-inch drive hex bit socket and an allen
wrench of the same size. I think it was 14mm, but I am not sure. You
will also need a couple of long (12-inch) 1/2-inch drive extensions, a
universal, and a ratchet. To get to one of the bolts, you need to come
over the tailpipe hanger bracket (from the transmission) with the two
extensions. My bolts were really corroded and hard to break loose, I
recommend that you douse them with PBBlaster and let them sit for a day
before you try breaking them loose. Anything smaller than 1/2-inch drive
is likely to break. I broke one universal doing my starter.

if you can't find the hex socket set at Autozone, I have an extra set. 14mm
should fit.
