[MBZ] Yet another oil thread - Mobil 1™ Formula M

2019-08-05 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Anybody seen this in stores?
Mobil says I can buy it at O'Reilly in my hometown, but not NAPA, Wal-Mart, etc.

For vehicles requiring a 5W-40 viscosity and specific Mercedes-Benz approvals

Mobil 1™ Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil
engineered to help prolong the life of both diesel- and gasoline-powered
automobiles that require an oil that is approved against the Mercedes Benz
MB-229.3 and 229.5 specifications.

I don't see Amsoil being any kind of cheaper than Mobil 1.
I can get Mobil 1 15w50 for less than $6 ($5.50 I think) a quart at
Autozone, less at Wal-Mart but I hates Wal-Mart.

Amsoil by comparison (this is all by the quart, bulk is less but the same
is true with 5 quart jugs at Wal-Mart).

5w40 European : $7.30qt, $7.25qt/12qt, $5.65qt/30gal
15w40 Heavy duty : $6.55qt, $6.45qt/12qt, $6.19qt/gal, $6.09qt/4gal,
$5.05qt/30gal

10w40 High performance : $7.00qt
20w50 High performance : $7.75
WCF 10w40 : $8.10
Their website got slow when I went back to do the larger sizes, you get
the idea though.
The online application guide lists the heavy duty 15w40 for my 190D, I'll
give them credit for listing the cheapest one first, thats nice.
It also lists synthetic blend that I won't even consider because I like
not changing the oil very often then Series 3000 5w30,($7.05) I've been
spoiled by this list into not considering anything xw30. Finally the 5w40
European.

For comparison I checked an '85 300CD and it lists the same.

Anyway, I don't see any big savings there although thats all at individual
purchaser prices. Can any of the dealers give us an idea what they
actually pay? How much is shipping?

How about Amsoil?

A friend of mine just got a dealership through them and the prices beat
the
heck out of Mobil 1. I hear ALLOT of people around here bragging about
how

good Amsoil is but I have yet to try it myself.

I saw a thread on a forum about this, a forum member had purchased a kit,
including a power stretcher to open up the boots so the small axle hole
would fit over the joint. You've got to get the outside of the joint
perfectly clean before you can safely slip the boot over it. I believe
the stretcher tool cost him $200-300.
I'm 90% sure I read the above on Mercedesshop last summer or fall. He
posted pictures of the whole procedure.
