[MBZ] computer question (what to buy)

quad core Q6600 - 2.4ghz dual core E8500 - 3.16 Ghz The dual core will be faster as desktop unless you want to multi task and run programs that can run multi threaded or if you are running some kind of server application or games. You always want at least 2 cores because the operating system (especially Windows) will need 1 just for itself. Having more than 2 cores on a desktop is of little use unless you are running software that can take advantage of them. Of course all this will change within the next few years.
